Let me relieve any confusion about what will happen to OSHA, NIOSH, and EPA after the "wait and see" period is over.  Every rule that can be overturned will be over turned, the budgets and work force will be cut to the point that the rest of their rules cannot be well-enforced.

I'm a very old broad, now, and have seen this before, most notably when Regan was in his 100 days and again when Bush II was inaugurated.  Nothing new.  Workers and public safety will suffer.  The environmental agenda will be all but over in the U.S.  The economy will boom for a select segment of the population.

According to the news - all the federal agencies are currently under a "wait and don't use social media" guidance.  The reports depending upon the outlets were running anywhere from a this is terrible, to this happens under a new administration.

The most objective report I heard was based upon - with this administration we know that there are going to be changes and until the new heads are confirmed, there is a desire to become more coherent in the communication, i.e. getting the same message throughout the organization.  This statement came out of the DOJ.

Not sure exactly where the real story is - but for those of us in industry that have been through large mergers and acquisitions, this is seeming a bit more of a business-like approach to get everyone the same information prior to going public.

Given how fast information travels now compared to where we were 8 or 16 years ago when we had government transitions, think some of this may be a sign of the times.

On another note - there is a hold for review of all the EPA regulations that came out recently - including the RMP one.

Everyone,

I respectfully disagree with the suggestion that we patiently stand around to wait and see.  It begins with EPA funds and contracts, I will suggest that the same will happen with the Depart. of Energy, etc.  I expect funding will dry up for NIH, NSF and other agency grants as well.  Furthermore, I think the "gag order" will be applied across most federal agencies.  Perhaps, only the Department of Defense will come out of this with only a little pain.

If we do not speak out now for science and our brothers and sisters in federal governmental agency positions, ask yourselves who will speak out for us when we are similarly restrained.

Et al,

Us ol' re-tread Texans might say: Y'all might just wait awhile and see what happens.  Let's as scientists and health & safety folk not go beserk over doomsayer's media and other bird droppings.  In a long career, most of what is popular hype seems to be what an ol' time cowboy might find behind the southerrn end of a northbound bull.

I suggest a period of what we in medicine call "watchful waiting" before we go flying off the handle.  I used to teach my medical students:  "Don't just do something, stand there." The situation somestimes evolves out of what seems to be chaos (Chaos Theory for those who follow it).  Sometimes, the best medicine is to do as much nothing as possible.  I think I've cured moer folks by stopping medications than I ever cured by prescribing same.

And so it begins.  The first one is disturbing because this is right up there with the climate change gag order we have previously seen in Florida-

And it gets worse: https://www.axios.com/trumpworld-prepares-to-hammer-the-epa-2209021483.html  "...The document goes on to recommend what can be done to "improve the use of science by EPA... EPA should not be funding scientific research-"  I guess that makes it easier to use alternate facts.

And finally, "CDC Cancels Conference on Climate Change and Health": http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/cdc-cancels-conference-climate-change-health-n711076

I don't care who the president or administration is - this isn=E2=80™t about them or who you voted for or against. It's about science and its role in setting government policy.  We need to do what we can as a community to educate the public on the critical contributions of agencies like EPA, OSHA (that one should be even more fun-) etc. and that these need to be based on science, not a special interest agenda.
