Our campus uses its chemical inventory database to identify peroxide forming chemicals. Each individual research laboratory is responsible for testing their chemicals using peroxide test strips and they are asked to document the date and results on the bottle.   Research labs are  reminded to test their peroxides during regular annual EH&S laboratory assessments. 

 

 

If peroxides  are found to be 30 ppm or higher, the laboratory is asked to dispose of the chemical.  At 800 ppm or higher the university would call in a specialist outside contractor to move and dispose of the chemical (which has happened once in the past 14 years).

Hi Joe,

 

We just implemented a new program for management of peroxide forming materials. We are using the low range Quantofix test strips, and are doing a pass/fail instead of threshold value.  We are doing that for all classes of peroxide forming materials.

Does anyone have a testing program in which peroxide forming chemicals are tested?  If so, what methodology are you using?  Do you have a threshold value for disposal, and is it for all peroxide formers or are there different thresholds specific to certain chemicals?
