And more alarming (no pun) than a potential for exposure or accidents, is the student leaving school thinking that muting an alarm is "normal" or "OK" in this situation. Schools owe students a learning environment that is always lawful and hopefully even complies with best standards. Learning about the laws and proper safety are just as important as the chemistry lessons.

We do not have a policy though I think having a policy prudent.
Last year when we have frequent alarms in two fumehoods, students would simple mute the alarm. On one occasion I watched our lab coordinator do the same. It took me several months to get our administration to call for
service. The excuse was lack of money. When we attempted to get the hood re certified 4 failed and not are sitting unused .
Having worked in the private sector prior to my current academic position, I am often surprised by what transpires.

Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone has a campus policy on safe fume hood use that could be shared. Specifically I am looking for procedures to follow when a fume hood (or multiple hoods) alarms.
Best,
Penny
