SAN DIEGO ‰?? Two men were charged Wednesday with a slate of narcotics and weapons charges in connection with a drug-lab explosion that set a northern San Diego County home ablaze last spring.

Gregory Allen Amos, 23, and 34-year-old Christopher Paul Hernandez allegedly were using butane to extract hash oil from marijuana in a house in the 1200 block of Barbara Drive in Vista when the blast occurred about 10:45 a.m. March 27, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Deputies and firefighters arrived to find a glass door blown out on a second-floor balcony of the burning residence and dozens of cans of butane strewn on the driveway, the court document states.

IOWA CITY (KCRG) - The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a report of a fire alarm activated on the University of Iowa Campus Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were called to Trowbridge Hall at 2:55 p.m. for a fire in one of the laboratories.

The fire was able to be extinguished with an extinguisher and authorities say 17 fire personnel responded to the alarm.

The fire started in laboratory equipment and then spread to nearby combustibles, causing light smoke damage on the fire floor and fire damage was only near the area where the fire began.

Nearly a decade after a polymer producer stopped using a toxic chemical at its Gloucester County plant, New Jersey is finally creating new rules to keep water in the affected areas safe to drink.

New Jersey has become the first state in the nation to create drinking water standards for a toxic chemical that has been found across the Garden State.

Effective Tuesday, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has set a maximum level of 13 parts per trillion for the chemical perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) in drinking water.

WHITEHALL (KDKA) ‰?? The owner of a Bethel Park flooring company was among the three contractors injured in a violent and unusual explosion at a Whitehall home Wednesday night.

All three men working on a job in the basement of a home in a residential neighborhood remain at Mercy Hospital with severe burns, two are in critical condition. Melted shoes and tattered clothes remain visible, evidence of the violent explosion that rocked this Whitehall home and sent neighbors running to help the injured.

One of the victims working for Sims Speciality Flooring of Bethel Park has been identified. The company‰??s president, David Sims, was severely burned while working in the basement of the home. The two other men have yet to be identified.

GREENWOOD CHEMICAL PLANT: A TOXIC LEGACY

It has been decades since four workers engulfed in flames fled the Greenwood Chemical Plant after highly volatile vapors exploded and caused a flash fire that closed the plant, revealing a toxic waste dump that landed the site on the federal government‰??s Superfund list.

But officials overseeing the cleanup of the worst chemical disaster in Albemarle County say most of the 33-acre property is cleared of contaminants and ready for use. Overcoming the stigma associated with a Superfund site is quite another challenge.

The tiny Greenwood Chemical Company, sitting on a steeply sloped, wooded parcel at the foot of Afton Mountain, employed no more than a dozen workers and made chemicals used in industrial, agricultural, pharmaceutical and photographic processes. Less than a mile from Pollak Vineyard on Newtown Road, it‰??s only a few hundred yards from a scenic overlook on Interstate 64 with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Rockfish Gap Valley.

(CADDO PARISH) - Cleanup crews are sifting through the rubble at AFCO today.

The chemical plant just west of Shreveport caught fire after an explosion yesterday afternoon.

Five workers were in the building at the time.

They all made it out safely.

Firefighters still aren't sure what started the fire, or what chemical exploded.

They say an unknown amount of chemicals leaked into the woods behind the building.

So, crews are now monitoring the air quality and a retention pond.

CALIFORNIA BANS USE OF MOST CHEMICAL FLAME RETARDANTS IN CHILDREN‰??S PRODUCTS AND FURNITURE

On August 29, 2018, despite industry criticism, the California state legislature passed AB 2998 (the ‰??Bill‰??), which will require that levels of chemical flame retardants in covered products be below 1,000 parts per million. The Bill, which the governor is expected to sign into law, states that starting January 1, 2020, distributing children‰??s products, mattresses and upholstered furniture containing most chemical flame retardants will be illegal in the state of California. Samples of covered products sold to consumers will be provided to California‰??s Department of Toxic Substances Control for testing, and if a product is found to be noncompliant, a fine may be assessed against the manufacturer, distributor and/or retailer.

The Bill is the latest in a series of legislative actions taken in California amid concerns that the furniture industry has been using chemical flame retardants‰??which the legislature believes pose a number of health risks to consumers‰??in order to meet California‰??s strict flammability standards. In 2013, the state rolled back the requirement that upholstered furniture be able to withstand an ‰??open flame,‰?? requiring instead that furniture be smolder-resistant only‰??a standard more easily met without the use of added chemical flame retardants. Concerned that some manufacturers were still using chemical flame retardants despite the updated standard, the California legislature made a number of findings in the Bill to support the new ban, including that the federal government has failed to adequately regulate the use of flame retardant chemicals and that those chemicals are not needed to prevent fire safety. Although the Bill was widely supported by consumer safety advo!
cacy organizations, industry groups opposed the new Bill, pointing out that the blanket ban eliminates critical fire safety features in consumer products.

Arkema Inc. and its CEO asked a Texas federal court to temporarily halt a civil case brought by first responders and residents who claimed they were harmed by the release of chemicals during Hurricane Harvey, saying that it should not proceed at the same time as a similar criminal case.

Arkema CEO Richard Rowe and the company said Wednesday that an early August indictment by a Texas grand jury included nearly identical allegations as those contained in the civil case.

MOUNT CARMEL ‰?? Two students and one teacher were injured in a minor accident in a Mount Carmel Area High School chemistry class on Thursday morning.

The incident also highlighted the ongoing issues with 911 communications in Northumberland County since emergency radios do not work inside the school district buildings.

Mount Carmel Area Superintendent Bernard Stellar said the accident occurred between 10:30 and 11 a.m.

Two students were injured and were treated at the hospital. The teacher was slightly injured and sought medical treatment, Stellar said.

The teacher indicated that all safety protocols were followed for the demonstration. Parents of the students were immediately contacted and they arrived at the school to accompany their children to the hospital, he said.

During the event, the school was on medical lockdown for approximately 45 minutes. This is a normal protocol for any medical emergency at Mount Carmel Area in order to provide students and staff privacy. Classes resumed when the students left, Stellar said.

SYLVAN LAKE, MI ‰?? A fuel spill covered a Michigan lake over Labor Day Weekend, prompting local authorities, hazmat teams and state officials to investigate. The emergency situation unfolded at Sylvan Lake in Oakland County on Sept. 1, when a team assembled to investigate a strong odor of diesel fuel and a portion of the lake covered in an oily substance.

The origin of the fuel spill has been determined as the Mobil Gas Station on South Telegraph Road in Sylvan Lake, based on the preliminary investigations.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit, Oakway Hazmat Team, the Department of Natural Resources, local fire departments and several other agencies responded to the scene, closed down the Mill Pond Dam to prevent further contamination of the Oakland County waterways. The agencies determined there was also fuel inside the storm drain systems in the area, which is a public hazard.

The fate of a lawsuit filed by a researcher severely injured in a lab accident may come down to what her employment status was at the University of Hawaii Manoa.

Thea Ekins-Coward was a postdoctoral fellow when the explosion occurred in 2016; she filed a lawsuit against UH claiming negligence in 2017.

The question about her employment status may elevate the case to the Hawaii Supreme Court after attorneys for Ekins-Coward filed a petition to the state‰??s high court last month, contending she was never a UH employee.

UH lawyers, who declined to comment for this report, argue in court documents that Ekins-Coward cannot pursue restitution in court. They say her only recourse is workers‰?? compensation.

NATURAL 'BREAKDOWN' OF CHEMICALS PREDICTS LUNG DAMAGE IN 9/11 FIREFIGHTERS -- SCIENCEDAILY

Abnormal levels of more than two dozen metabolites -- chemicals produced in the body as it breaks down fats, proteins and carbohydrates -- can reliably predict which Sept. 11 firefighters developed lung disease and which did not, a new analysis shows.

Researchers say the results, published by NYU School of Medicine researchers in the journal BMJ Open Respiratory Research online Sept. 4, could lead to metabolic tests for early detection of lung damage in all disaster victims exposed to fine particles from fire, smoke, and toxic chemicals, not just 9/11 firefighters.

The study, researchers say, offers the first evidence that metabolite blood tests conducted within months of the disaster could still help in the detection of obstructive airway disease, or OAD. Such analysis could aid in diagnosing OAD in the roughly 9,000 firefighters exposed to toxic chemicals at the World Trade Center (WTC) on Sept. 11, 2001, or during the cleanup that followed.

NEW DELHI: Two men were killed and eight injured when a major fire gutted a warehouse in outer Delhi‰??s Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar on Tuesday evening. The factory, operating out of a three-storey building, had among stored items highly inflammable chemicals. The fire started when the compressed natural gas kit installed in a mini truck exploded. Two men who were unloading chemical compounds from the truck died on the spot, while eight men working on the first floor suffered injuries.
Police said the warehouse was running illegally as its owner failed to provide any valid documents of the property.
The fire service and police were informed about the blaze at 4.20 pm. Ten fire tenders were sent to the site, but when the inferno could not be controlled even after over an hour, seven more tenders were pressed into service. It took two more hours before the flames were doused.

WILLOWBROOK, IL ‰?? Several political leaders and candidates gathered outside Sterigenics International Inc., on Tuesday morning after reports that emissions from the facility could contribute to an increased risk of cancer in the area. A recent report from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, which is a division of the CDC, stated, "If measured and modeled data represent typical EtO ambient concentrations in ambient air, an elevated cancer risk exists for residents and off-site workers in the Willowbrook community surrounding the Sterigenics facility. These evaluated risks present a public health hazard to these populations."

Now, political leaders are demanding that President Donald Trump and Congress support the Environmental Protection Agency, according to a release. Some local leaders and opponents are also blasting 6th District Congressional Rep. Peter Roskam, accusing him of staying silent on the issue.

Rep. Bill Foster (D-11), along with Roskam's Democratic opponent Sean Casten, 17th District Cook County Board candidate Abdelnasser Rashid, 41st District State Senate candidate Bridget Fitzgerald, 82nd District State Representative candidate Tom Chlystek and others called for the president and Roskam to fully fund and protect the EPA so it can monitor and address incidents like the one at Sterigenics in Willowbrook.
