HAZMAT crews have shutdown an area in Beresfield after a chemical spill.

Fire and Rescue crews were called after reports that 1000 litres of liquid form sodium hydroxide had escaped a storage container at a warehouse in Balbu Close, about 8.45am Monday.

On arrival at the scene crews discovered a container had ruptured after it was damaged by a vehicle, it what is suspected to be a workplace accident.

At least 600 litres of the substance had escaped the container, HAZMAT crews have since cordoned off the area.

More than 60 people were evacuated from the building and surrounding sites.

CHEMICAL SPILL IN FAMU‰??S SCIENCE LAB

A chemical spill occurred Tuesday, Oct. 23 in a science lab on Florida A&M University‰??s campus. No injuries were reported and no hazardous threats were posed. The building had to be evacuated and cleared as a safety precaution.
The threat was quickly neutralized and students are back working in the lab.
The Environmental Safety Team, Tallahassee Police Department and Fire Department were called to make sure the building would be safe to enter again.
The spill occurred around noon in the Humphries Science Research Building while Bereket Mochona, an associate professor of organic chemistry, was conducting a chemical inventory check in one of his labs. Mochona noticed water was leaking in the refrigerator specifically catered to holding the chemicals.
‰??Usually I prepare the chemicals for students before they do their experiments,‰?? Mochona said. ‰??I noticed the refrigerator was having a malfunction and when I opened the refrigerator, water was leaking. One of my graduate students was in the lab and I told her to go to the library until I was finished cleaning it up.‰??
When Mochona began to take the chemicals out of the refrigerator to clean the spill, one of the containers spilled along the sink when he placed it on the counter.
The containers were filled with benzyl chloride, a colorless, reactive liquid and organochlorine compound commonly used as a chemical building block.
‰??At the time I tried to neutralize it with a chemical spill kit. But the fumes became stronger and that‰??s when I had to call Environmental Safety,‰?? Mochona said.
The fire alarm was pulled and people were told to leave through the emergency exit doors inside classrooms and labs.

FLARE SHOOTS INTO THE SKY AFTER A HYDROCARBON PIPE LEAK AT TORRANCE REFINERY ‰?? DAILY BREEZE

A large column of fire shot up into the sky in Torrance on Saturday evening, after a crack in a hydrocarbon pipe caused a leak at the Torrance Refining Co. and the refinery burned gas with a flare.

A power outage at the refinery caused a rupture in the pipe, leading to the leak of hydrocarbon gas, said Steve Treskes, assistant chief at the Torrance Fire Department.

To avoid any further leak, Treskes said the refinery sent the gas through the flare, which shot up flames into the air for about 10 minutes.

‰??When you have a malfunction or break in the line, it‰??s safety procedure to send the product through a flare,‰?? Treskes said.

ENDOCRINE SOCIETY EXPERTS QUESTION FDA'S STATEMENT ON BPA

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) "jumped the gun" when it recently announced that the "authorized use" of the food packaging compound bisphenol A (BPA) continues to be safe for consumers despite study findings to the contrary, scientists with the Endocrine Society say.
What's more, the regulatory agency dismissed results from its own research findings in the Consortium Linking Academic and Regulatory Insights on BPA Toxicity (CLARITY-BPA) study, according to Laura N. Vandenberg, PhD, associate professor and graduate program director, School of Public Health and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts at Amherst

MAJOR DANISH STUDY IDENTIFIES NINE NEW EDCS

The Danish environment ministry has published a major study that identifies nine new substances as endocrine disruptors based on "solid scientific evidence".

The study, commissioned by the Danish EPA and carried out by researchers from the DTU Food Institute and the University of Southern Denmark, screened thousands of chemicals for endocrine-disrupting properties.

Bisphenol AF (BPAF), considered an alternative to bisphenol A (BPA), is amongst them. Earlier this year an NGO called on EU regulators to "phase out" the use of groups of similar chemicals to prevent substitution of one hazardous substance with a related one that has similar properties.

The nine chemicals identified as EDCs and their effects are:

bisphenol AF ‰?? humans and environment;
di-n-pentylphthalate ‰?? humans;
fenitrothion ‰?? humans;
isobutyl paraben ‰?? humans;
octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) ‰?? humans;
prochloraz ‰?? humans and environment;
triclocarban ‰?? humans;
tris(methylphenyl) phosphate ‰?? humans; and
salicylic acid ‰?? humans.

BREMERTON -- Police are waiting on results from a laboratory to determine the type of explosive device that detonated Wednesday near downtown, but reported Thursday it was some sort of firework.

Though early reports from investigators at the scene said the device may have been a "sparkler bomb," Bremerton Police Lt. Aaron Elton told the Kitsap Sun that investigators determined it was not a "sparkler bomb."

"Sparkler bombs" are explosives made from combining legal fireworks.

The boom, reported at about 1:45 p.m., was heard blocks away, setting off car alarms and leaving a small amount of damage to a car and wall in the alley where it detonated. No injuries were reported, but parts of the explosive flew across Sixth Street and landed on a sidewalk.

CINCINNATI ‰??
A small chemical fire prompted an early dismissal at Wyoming High School, fire officials said.

According to Fire Chief Dennis Brown, a chemical fire broke in a chemical closet between two of the school's chemistry classrooms Thursday morning.

"Due to water damage from the use of the sprinkler system this morning, Wyoming High School will be closed tomorrow, Nov. 2." Suzy Henke, school district spokeswoman, said.

Henke said the chemical reaction occurred when a chemical was being disposed of in the chemical receptacle in a small room outside the classroom. Chemicals were not being mixed at the time and did not spill, according to Henke.
