Monique,

We're going through the same thing in PA with the legalization of medical marijuana. In the end, we decided to stick with our original policy, which is to ban substances that cause impairment of the ability to work safely unless prescribed by a physician, in which case accommodations will be made in order to keep the employee safe. The thing with marijuana is that it can be detected in drug tests for up to 48 hours after use, but just because it is detectable doesn't mean a person is unsafe to be in the lab. As far as I know, there isn't a chart for marijuana like there is for blood alcohol level to determine a "cutoff" for intoxication. If anyone has seen anything like that, I'd be interested in it.

Does anyone out there have any specific policies for being intoxicated in lab? Now that recreational marijuana has been legalized here, we are considering the ramifications in the chem teaching labs. Though I think a bigger concern is those who come doped up on other things. So, anything on any type of intoxication will do for me.

Thank you,

Monique
