This is another angle to consider about artificial nails in the lab. I am more concerned about flammability of the nails and do not allow them in the lab when active flames are in use. If worn - heat protective gloves must be used. Artificial nails (i.e. Acrylic nails) are highly flammable! I learned about the flammability of acrylics when I was in grad school. Worked 3rd shift in a plastics plant as a line inspector. We used to produce long acrylic sheets or panels that were then cut and used for various items. Acrylic unfortunately shatters like glass if cut with a hydraulic cutter. Heaters were placed over the cutters to prevent the shattering and make a smooth cut. One evening the acrylic sheet got caught on the corner of the cutter and was thrust up against the heater. Within a matter of 30 seconds - the whole 20 feet of the acryllic panel burst into flames.

Hello everyone,
We have seen that some students and teachers use quite long fancy nails while working in the lab. This topic was the object of a discussion in UNISON (University of Sonora). The arguments included the respect of the person to use that type of nails. However, it was also commented that it is a risk for those who use those fantasy nails and also for those who are working around in the lab.
What is your opinion about it? Have you implemented any policy in this regard?
Best regards,
Rossy
