A laboratory technician sustained severe burn injuries as a fire broke out at a pathological lab at Jhawtala in the city on Friday.

The injured, Maksuda Akter, 30, a technical staff of the lab at Moon Hospital in the city, hails from Chandpur.

With 30 percent of her body burnt, Maksuda is undergoing treatment at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit , said Dr Jakir Hossain of the private hospital.

Maksuda was burnt as a fire originated from a machine at the lab on the eighth floor of the hospital on Friday night.

At that time, at least five patients and staffs sustained minor injuries while trying to leave in a hurry amid panic, said Abdullah, manager of the hospital.

A chemical reaction involving bleach and drain cleaner in a house on Cherry Street lead to four residents being transported to Altru Hospital on Friday.

The Grand Forks Fire Department‰??s team for hazardous materials arrived at 805 Cherry St. at roughly 8:45 p.m., where residents had poured bleach into a plugged floor drain in the basement. The bleach reacted with remnants of a sulfuric acid drain cleaner, creating a chlorine gas that made it hard for residents to breathe.

Fire department personnel cleared the floor drain and flushed it with a large quantity of water before ventilating the home of the chlorine odor, while four residents were taken to the hospital.

Seven Grand Forks Fire Department personnel were on the scene, with assistance from the Grand Forks Police Department and Altru Hospital paramedics.

The government has again formed a committee to prepare a list of factories which use flammable products and chemicals in Dhaka and operate without having licence as the previous committee failed to do the same job in four years.
Labour ministry on Friday formed a five-member committee headed by additional secretary Syed Ahmed and asked it to prepare the report with recommendations within 10 days.
Following the fire accident at Apcco Bangladesh Limited, a plastic factory operating illegally at Mirpur in the capital, that killed 13 people on January 31, 2015, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments had formed a five-member committee for listing factories running unlawfully and also deal in flammable items and chemicals.
A high official of labour ministry said that they had formed the committee in February of the year and asked it to give the real picture of the unapproved chemical, plastic and rubber factories but no progress was reported.

GAS CYLINDER OR TRANSFORMER BLAST?

Three days after one of the deadliest fires in Dhaka‰??s history, authorities are yet to determine the cause of the massive blaze that killed at least 67 people in Old Dhaka's densely populated Chawkbazar area.

Currently at least half of a dozen of probe committees, formed by different government organisations, are working on to find out the actual cause of what sparked fire.

They offered different views, however, their initial comments are basically centring two core reasons- either a gas cylinder blast or a transformer blast. However only one point where almost all of them have similar view is that chemical stored at the area helped spread fire.
