Hi,

My lab is in Johor, Malaysia. All of us in the lab are from Malaysia. Just to share with you guys our experience. Dealing with authorities, our documents are in national language (Malay). Dealing with customers and private sectors, our documents are in English..

Some in our documents, we make in dual-language as it involves both parties.

Dealing with students, so far (even we are new in food diagnostics) we are good. The locals and international students have good command in English. We did ask one of our interns to translate into their preferred language (for method development) as we realize our customers and stakeholders are from southeast Asia and Asia Pacific.

Chemical Health and Safety is a challenge for us in JTLab and we are striving to provide the best to our talents, interns, and customers.

The Safety Training Consortium is an association of =EF=BB=BFhigher research universities that develops safety training for the research community. There is an e-Learning course on Fundamentals of Laboratory Safety in Mandarin. If you need a Spanish course, that is not available yet..

Subject: [DCHAS-L] English in Lab

I was wondering if anyone might help me with this issue. I have a number of English language learners in my classes. Recently there was a near miss accident that was in part due to the student not understanding me and me not being able to catch the issue as their conversation in lab is not in a language I understand.

I want the class to be inclusive but it is hard monitor issues when the conversations among students are not in English.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle this?

Thanks
