The glove companies say the nails can't extend over 1/2 inch or the gloves will be compromised.

And those hair extensions and hair sprays are in my area since I've seen a pyrotechnic spark set a head on fire.

If I ran a lab I'd write a disclaimer that everyone would sign.  It would say:

Achtung!

Be aware: this is a laboratory.  That means flame, heat, flammable and volatile chemicals, electrical equipment, and other hazardous materials and items are an important part of this scene.  These are not a threat if safety procedures are followed and you don't come into the lab wearing or bearing flammable or hazardous items of your own:  Included are:

* polymer fingernails (NOTE: if you have demonstrated you are capable of responsible behavior, nails that extend no more that 1/2 inch from finger tips so that gloves can be worn will be grudgingly tolerated);

*  hair either on your head or on your chin that either is not tied back out of the way, or that is not all, or in part, grown from your own follicles (NOTE: your own hair is already pretty easy to set alight without adding a lot of hair spray, polymer or textile fiber falls, extensions, or braid.  You can add hair if it can be tied back and if the fiber used to simulate hair passes the NFPA 701 flame propagation test.);

* Clothing items that are not fire-retarded, inherently fire-resistant (e.g., cotton or wool), or that cannot be covered by a lab coat;

*  Footwear that does not fully enclose and protect your feet; and

* Any other combustible, flammable or otherwise hazardous item on your person that common sense or the lab monitor tells you does not belong in the lab.

Remember: we are obligated to keep you safe because, when you catch fire, you put others in the lab at risk.

I have read, understood, and will abide by this code so help me _____________________date_______

Doctora =C3=81lvarez Ch=C3=A1vez,

How do you find gloves to accommodate 1.5 in nails? What about polypropylene
hair extensions [wicks]? I'm not a fan of fashion in the lab.

My 2-cents:

If it is not interfering with the dexterity required for the operation, I
won't have a problem with it.

Hello everyone,

We have seen that some students and teachers use quite long fancy nails
while working in the lab. This topic was the object of a discussion in
UNISON (University of Sonora). The arguments  included the respect of the
person to use that type of nails.  However, it was also commented that it is
a risk for those who use those fantasy nails and also for those who are
working around in the lab.

What is your opinion about it? Have you implemented any policy in this
regard?

Best regards,

Rossy
