Lab coats are important! However, some students in "100 level" courses won't see the inside of a chemistry lab ever again (i.e. engineering students, nursing students, dental hygiene). At that level you can teach the same principals with less risky experiments that don't require lab coats.

I am trying to find any information regarding the requirement of the use of a lab coat by students in general chemistry labs vs. upper level courses such as organic, advance lab, inorganic, etc. Does ACS have recommendations/guidelines to that end? What are some of your experiences at your institutions? Thank you in advance.
