You know, that was exactly what my observations were until this pass week end when I downloaded a bunch of Rosco SDSs (a theatrical supplier) with no GHS or categories and only HMIS data.  And then when I downloaded the Sigma Cyrene one and also saw the HMIS and only one category, I began to loose faith.  But it appears it is just this theatrical company against which I am now plotting.

I also got a great slide last week for the powerpoints on this subject..  I was inspecting a large theatrical company who said they had updated all their SDS books.  When I went into the first shop and opened the SDS binder, I saw that someone had laboriously gone through all those MSDSs and carefully blacked out the word "Material" and the "M" in MSDS.    The title page is a great slide for how not to do this.

Being both a manufacture and purchaser of hazardous materials, SDS are required to have the information to match SDS and train accordingly. I understand OSHA allows companies to still use the HMIS, we elected to go pure SDS on our own products due to domestic and international shipments. In the past 3+ years we have never had anyone ask about HMIS data - maybe we are just fortunate, but a Company has no requirements to do that work for an end user. Even SDS I receive daily rarely had HMIS information.

The simple answer is because end-users, be they companies, schools, what-not, have hazard communication in place which uses to a greater or lesser degree, HMIS.  If the SDS writer does not include it on the document, the chemical source will receive many phones asking for it.  I have been there.

So, confusion of 1-4 or 4-1 notwithstanding, both HMIS and NFPA are included along with GHS.

Re: What is happening to the GHS SDS?

I'm hoping someone can tell my why, after we finally have a good system of describing acute and chronic toxicity with the GHS dose-response Categories, I'm suddenly seeing the misleading dumb old HMIS one number toxicity system showing up even on the new Sigma SDS for Cyrene.

This is really depressing.
