I just handed a Daily News article on this trial out to my audience at a NYCOSH training on the explosion pentagon in which the methanol experiment was used as the example of how this is applicable to vapor/liquid system.  And Samuella's paper was Exhibit A.

Then we went on to dusts and the explosion pentagon.  And finally to pyrotechnics which only vary because the source of oxygen is a chemical rather than air and the "dispersion" is fine particle size and good mixing of the fuel and the oxygen source.

It's a fun way to do this because the colors obtain by excitation of metals applies to both the Rainbow experiment and the pyrotechnics.

"Trial begins for student disfigured by science experiment gone wrong", NY Post June 10, 2019:

Suing for $27 million dollars. Hope he gets every penny because record jury awards can often achieve what regulations and public education efforts can not.

A good example of that is how IKEA has finally redesigned its dressers: https://www.consumerreports.org/furniture/new-ikea-dressers-are-designed-to-reduce-tip-over-injuries-and-deaths/  It's had an effect on the entire industry which is now under pressure to update their voluntary standards.

Getting a little off-topic, it's worth noting that the CPSC was going to issue rules that would create enforceable standards for furniture tip-over, but, gee, what a surprise, their 2019 operating plan now says they will instead "continue to work with ASTM voluntary standards committees on the applicable tip-over-related standards and will collaborate with external partners to conduct research, data analysis, and technical work to evaluate the voluntary standard as well as inform rulemaking as appropriate." (seee https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/Fiscal%20Year%202019%20Operating%20Plan%20-%20September%2019%202018.pdf?0xhrveG_XwZe7p16RPQa.Fz86KluTv5g page 16).  More study is needed, yeah, right.
