Monique,

I'll only add a few things to Debbie's email (great summary and great advice). (1) When Debbie mentions fire resistance separation, you may also hear 1 hour vs 2 hour fire separation. That's important depending on what you are trying to segment. (2) Those walls have to be without unsealed penetrations. (3) Depending on your local code, smoke barriers can also be important. (4) Unfortunately, yes it is entirely possible that you have an entire floor or even an entire building with only one control area if it hasn't been constructed or maintained with the appropriate codes in mind.

Hello Everyone,

I am reaching out as I need to know the practical definition of a "control area".  The NFPA definition is vague and has been interpreted by someone as the whole floor of our building.  I find this hard to believe when it is often being used as "laboratory suite or control area" in the standards.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
