DUSON- According to Duson Chief of Police Kip Judice, multiple agencies were called to Lucky Deuces Casino and Roady‰??s Truck Stop last night after reports of a vapor leak from a tanker.

Officials say, the tanker contained a small amount of mixture of highly toxic chemicals. The truck stop and casino were evacuated as hazmat officials identified the leak and patched it up.

The air quality was deemed safe around 1:25 a.m. this morning and both business have since re-opened.

PUTNAM VALLEY, NY ‰?? An overturned tank truck closed Peekskill Hollow Road for 21 hours Monday-Tuesday as crews worked to contain fluid spills and right the vehicle. The driver suffered minor injuries.

The accident happened at 1 p.m. Monday. The driver of the tanker truck, which went off the road and into a tree, told Putnam sheriff's deputies that while driving on Tinker Hill Road, to a jobsite located off Barger Street, he "lost his air and brakes, and could not stop" the truck.

About 3,300 gallons of asphalt emulsion spilled into the stream, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The words may not have been explicit, but oilpatch contractor Matthew Linnitt says he read between the lines: lie on official documents about an incident that could have killed him, or someone would be fired.

The tacit threat, he alleges, was handed down by his supervisor at Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) after a close call with hydrogen sulfide on a northwestern Alberta well site on May 2, 2016.

Hydrogen sulfide, also known as H2S or sour gas, is a toxic substance that can be fatal in high concentrations, and is sometimes leaked from the wellheads, pump jacks, pipes, tanks and flare stacks of oilfields.

At the time, Linnitt considered himself lucky to have escaped with his life ‰?? he was working alone on a remote site in Karr Creek, Alta., when a geyser of fluids and poisonous sour gas erupted from its depths. A valve hadn‰??t been properly shut down.

CARPET cleaning products are behind a chemical scare which led to 11 people being treated in Christchurch on Monday.

Casualties complained of breathing difficulties, dizziness and sickness after a spring clean at an address over the weekend.

Fire crews and paramedics rushed to a Sovereign Housing Association property in Grange Road just after 9.25am.

A spokesperson from the Dorset fire service said two fire crews were sent to a 'hazmat incident'.

"Fire crews attended along with the ambulance service," the spokesperson said.

"Two engines from Christchurch went to the scene, as well as a hazardous materials officer."

Earlier today, the spokesperson said the incident involved "unknown chemicals". However, it has now been clarified that cleaning chemicals were responsible.

Authorities are still baffled by an unidentified strange odor that sent more than a dozen truck stop patrons to the hospital over the weekend.

The smell was first reported just before 4 p.m. on Friday, August 16, at the Bannock Peak Truck Stop and Casino located on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation near Pocatello, Idaho, according to a report from the Idaho State Journal.

Within an hour of the odor being reported, the Fort Hall Fire Department responded and the truck stop was evacuated to allow hazmat teams to search for the source of the smell.

Seventeen people who were in the truck stop/casino at the time that the odor was reported were taken to the hospital via ambulance. All 17 people were released from the hospital by Saturday morning.

Hazmat teams with various agencies searched the facility for hours but were not able to locate the source of the smell.

PARAMOUNT (CBSLA) ‰?? A fire tore through the roof of a commercial building in Paramount Monday where authorities say they uncovered a marijuana grow operation.

(CBS2)

A Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman said narcotics and organic materials were found inside the building sometime after crews arrived at 10:40 a.m. in the 7300 block of East Somerset Boulevard.

Aerial footage showed huge flames and plumes of black smoke billowing hundreds of feet into the air and dangerously close to several homes that sit adjacent to the building. Neighbors recorded cell phone video of explosions during the course of the fire.

‰??The flames they were like explosive, and you could hear the explosions, and they were throwing like ashes and stuff all over,‰?? one neighbor told CBS2.

MOUNT PROSPECT: NINE DAYS, THREE CHEMICAL FIRES, ONE LOCATION

Even though Mount Prospect firefighters responded to a packaging manufacturing company for the third time in nine days, each fire was ruled accidental.

Saturday (Aug. 16), a 40-gallon cardboard container was found on fire outside of Multi-Pack Solutions, 1804 W. Central Rd., at approximately 2:57 a.m. with an unknown chemical substance. Crews arrived and used Purple-K, a dry chemical, to put out the fire. No injuries were reported and the fire department left within an hour and a half, according to Mount Prospect Fire Chief Brian Lambel.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, MPFD and Mount Prospect Public Works worked together to ensure that the small amount of chemical on the ground didn‰??t go into the sewers. The fire department didn‰??t flow any water, but the two sewers in the area were sealed off with sand in case of rain.

Multi-Pack Solutions‰?? clean-up company began cleaning up, but the amount of the unknown chemical on the ground was minimal, said Lambel.

Firefighters responded to Multi-Pack Solutions for two different fire alarms on Wednesday, Aug. 7. The first was for a smoldering chemical detergent inside of a bulk container. It was removed and the remaining chemicals were moved into a refrigerated semi-trailer to keep the chemical cool. The second occurred in the semi-trailer which became ‰??heavily involved with fire‰?? due to the chemical detergent‰??s oxidizing nature, according to a Mount Prospect Fire Department press release from Aug. 8.

Personnel from Savanah Fire Rescue put out a blaze in a warehouse at the Nexeo Solutions chemical plant in Savannah, GA last Friday, several local news organizations reported.

Crews responded to the Telfair Road site at about 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that the flames originated from a warehouse that is used to store petroleum products, coverage by the Savannah Business Journal said.

‰??No one was injured. The fire was contained to the warehouse,‰?? Savannah Fire Rescue said in a post to the social media website Twitter.

NO LESSON LEARNT

t seems the lessons have not learnt been yet. Six months have passed since the devastating Chawkbazar fire, and Old Dhaka is still sitting on a ticking time bomb as chemical warehouses continue to operate -- mostly in residential buildings -- due to lack of action by the authorities concerned.

What‰??s more frustrating is that families of the victims who lost their lives in the chemical blaze, have not received any financial assistance till date, despite promises made by authorities.

Once a crowded place, Chawkbazar‰??s Churihatta has become quiet, as the fire changed the landscape of the neighbourhood with Haji Wahed Mansion [from where the fire started] still being considered hazardous. Locals fear it may collapse anytime.

A three-storeyed building, opposite to Haji Wahed Mansion, was also damaged in the incident, .

The gated StillWaters community was shook Sunday night with an explosion from a methamphetamine lab.

‰??It was a shake and bake lab,‰?? Tallapoosa County Narcotics Task Force‰??s Fred White said. ‰??It looks like it exploded in the bathroom. It was more of a pressure explosion. It caused the ceiling tiles to be pushed out of place and blew out the back sliding glass of the condo. It was a lot of pressure.‰??

Residents of Martin Villas evacuated and waited outside while law enforcement and firefighters made sure everything was safe including the area around the dumpster used by residents.

CHEMISTS CONTINUE TO FORGET SAFETY CONCERNS ABOUT SODIUM HYDRIDE

A recent report is bringing chemists‰?? attention to a longstanding but frequently forgotten hazard in chemistry. Sodium hydride (NaH), when used with certain solvents, can unexpectedly generate heat and gas, leading to a runaway reaction or even an explosion (Org. Process Res. Dev. 2019, DOI: 10.1021/acs.oprd.9b00276).

Synthetic chemists often use NaH to pluck protons from molecules. But to get this ionic base into solution with greasy organic molecules, chemists usually have to use a so-called polar aprotic solvent, such as dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylformamide (DMF), or dimethylacetamide (DMAc).

Reports that NaH in these solvents can lead to explosions date back more than 50 years, says Qiang Yang, a chemist with Corteva Agriscience who led the team behind the report. Nevertheless, he says, every year chemists publish papers that describe the use of these unsafe combinations. Yang‰??s team reports that between 2014 and 2018, Organic Letters published 38‰??62 papers/year with these combinations, the Journal of Organic Chemistry published 28‰??46 papers/year, and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry published 67‰??94 papers/year.

‰??The most striking feature of this paper is the authors‰?? data compilation showing the abundance of recent papers that continue to use these hazardous reagent combinations,‰?? says Suzanne Blum, a chemist at the University of California, Irvine.
