If you're right, it's not only unsafe; it's extra messy, as in sooty.
As a school administrator, I want to know WHY. I've never heard of a teacher contract that requires a teacher to entertain the students. And don't try the whole, "well, it engages the students " argument. Student engagement means that
the students are working on a meaningful task.

My money is on calcium carbide because he said "starting to generate that flammable gas". Pour water on the calcium carbide and it makes acetylene; the basis for old miner's lamps.
