I'm pleased to let DCHAS members know that there is a new resource from the ACS Committee on Chemical Safety to help address safety concerns related to chemical demonstrations and videos. We have been working on this rubric for about 1.5 years as it has gone through peer review from chemistry educators and EHS professionals. The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) advises that an important obligation of science teachers is to provide appropriate modeling of science safety. Media posted for public viewing is no exception (see http://static.nsta.org/pdfs/SafetyInTheMedia.pdf for more information on this).
The purpose of this Safety Rubric for Assessing Chemical Demonstration Videos is to provide a template for educators to review the safety and pedagogy of chemical demonstration videos in order to determine whether they should be used in the classroom.
