WOODLAND HILLS (CBSLA) ‰?? The manager of an extended-stay hotel said the hotel had been deemed safe and that operations had returned back to normal Tuesday night after a massive morning response to what authorities called an example of the ongoing opioid epidemic.

‰??It‰??s scary being somewhere where you don‰??t know what you‰??re neighbors are doing, for sure,‰?? Mary O‰??Neill, a hotel guest, said.

But guests at the Woodland Hills hotel found out exactly what some of their neighbors were doing when firefighters arrived Tuesday morning. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, four people staying at the hotel admitted they had ingested the opioid fentanyl.

‰??One person was in grave condition, three others showing signs of narcotic overdose,‰?? Battalion Chief Andrew Wordin, of the LAFD, said.

That admission triggered a hazmat response. Fire crews said they believed the threat was contained to the one room, but they brought in special equipment for tests just to make sure the hotel was safe for guests.

‰??Fentanyl is a very, very potent opiate, and it can cause, in very low doses, euphoria,‰?? Dr. David Levine, of the Keck School of Medicine, said. ‰??But in more high doses or moderate doses, it can cause someone to become comatose and stop breathing and ultimately lead to cardiac arrest.‰??

RAJKOT: The fire that broke out in the bulk methanol storage tank near Kandla Port in Kutch district on Monday afternoon was still raging on Tuesday. Sources said that spark from welding like work on the tank could have triggered the explosion and the resultant fire that killed four men.
Kutch district collector Praveena D K told TOI: ‰??We are awaiting the for final report but according to preliminary assessment some welding work was being done on the upper surface of the tank which could have triggered the fire.‰?? Usually, the maintenance work is done after the tank is emptied but it was not regular kind of maintenance work.
The bulk chemical tanks near the methanol tank were emptied as a precautionary measure. Fire officials said that the blaze was under control but will be completely doused only by Wednesday morning. Eight fire tenders were still engaged in dousing the fire.

FIRE THAT RIPPED THROUGH DENTAL LABORATORY WAS 'PREMEDITATED ARSON ATTACK'

Police have launched an investigation after a 'premeditated arson attack' on a pair of dental labs in Bolton .

Pristine Dental Laboratory and R&W Dental Lab were gutted after the building they were based in, in Plodder Lane, Farnworth, went up in flames shortly after midnight on December 27.

Fire crews tackled the blaze, which tore through both the ground and first floor, as well as the roof space, throughout the night.

Police have now launched an investigation into the incident after they discovered CCTV footage of two men, who they believe to have started the blaze, entering the rear of the building.

The pair were inside the premises for about 10 minutes before a large explosion was heard.

The footage then shows the men running back out through the rear entrance, police say.

Zaosong Zheng, 29, was an accomplished Chinese medical student and a promising cancer researcher who last year earned a visa sponsored by Harvard University to study in the United States.

But on Monday, a federal judge in Boston ruled that evidence suggested Zheng had tried to smuggle vials of research specimens in a sock packed in his suitcase bound for China. Zheng is alleged to have stolen the materials from his lab at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as part of China‰??s longstanding effort to acquire intellectual property from American colleges and universities.

His arrest reflects a wider crackdown by the US government in the past year on Chinese scholars and researchers suspected of espionage and scientific theft. Several Boston-based researchers have apparently been stopped at Logan as part of the enforcement effort.

In court on Monday, US District Court Magistrate Judge David H. Hennessy said that Zheng was a flight risk and his connections to the Chinese government, which gave him a scholarship, would make it easier for him to leave the country. Hennessy granted the federal prosecutors‰?? request to detain Zheng until his trial.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. ‰?? The community is safe after an acid spill at a Muskegon Heights business Monday morning.

It happened at Quality Plating Co., located at 2712 Mcilwraith St., north of Broadway Avenue.

According to Muskegon Heights Fire Chief Christopher Dean, it was a small but severe sulfuric acid spill and firefighters was able to stop it from going downstream into a storm drain.

According to authorities, a Quality Plating employee was taking a tote of sulfuric acid off the back of a truck and was in the process of lowering it onto the ground when it tipped and spilled. Less than 50 gallons were lost.

The county's hazmat team was called in to pump the rest of the chemical out of the tote and keep the situation from getting worse.

The operator of a Commerce City oil refinery says it's not yet ready to reopen one of the facility's refining units following a malfunction that spewed yellow ash over the surrounding area earlier this month ‰?? but it's assuring the community that when it does, such an incident won't happen again.

Canadian oil giant Suncor Energy once again apologized for the refinery's "operational upset" in a statement released Friday, December 27, and said that it won't restart the unit in question before it conducts additional safety tests.

"While we had planned to begin start-up of the fluidized catalytic cracker unit (FCC) this week, we‰??ve made the decision to do additional operability checks in the unit to ensure we have ideal start-up conditions," the company said in its release.

The unit has been shut down since December 11, when a malfunction caused a plume of yellowish material ‰?? identified by Suncor as a clay-like substance known as "catalyst" ‰?? to drift into the air above the refinery and fall on parts of Commerce City. Two nearby schools were placed on lockdown when staff noticed unusually poor air quality and a layer of dust coating cars and other outdoor surfaces.

A man is likely to have one hand amputated after chemicals exploded at a Brisbane home while he was trying to build a rocket based on YouTube videos.

The 40-year-old victim was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a serious condition on Tuesday morning with major hand and leg injuries, including a compound fracture to his left leg and a potential hand amputation.

A man is seriously injured, losing his hand and risking the lives of his young son and elderly father after his home-made rocket explodes at his Chermside West home in Brisbane.

The victim's four-year-old son and an elderly man who were also in the Chermside West home at the time of the explosion, were not injured.

Queensland police Inspector Geoff Acreman said it appeared to be a case of ‰??a hobby gone very badly wrong‰?? and the victim was ‰??lucky to be making it to the new year‰??.

Paramedics were called to a home in Chermside West just before 8am today after reports of an explosion.
A 40-year-old man was found at the back of the house where he'd been experimenting with chemicals in an attempt to make a rocket.

The man is assisted by paramedics before being transported to hospital. (9News)
His four-year-old son and elderly father had been watching but thankfully went inside moments before the blast, which blew out nearly every window in the home.
Geoff Acreman from Queensland Police said the man had successfully made rockets in his backyard in the past.
"It isn't the first one he has made, he's had some successful launches previously... this one not so much," he said.

The Pierre Volunteer Fire Department invited capital area residents to bring their real Christmas trees to the refuse disposal area to help the PVFD conduct an experiment, and to remind folks to take care of their Christmas trees throughout the season.

One-third of house fires beginning with Christmas trees happen in the month of January, according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).

Armed with a clipboard, Logan Zeisler of PVFD Engine No. 4, questioned folks as they drove up to drop off their trees. For the experiment and safety survey, Zeisler asked how long the tree had been at the home, what it was stored in, how often it was watered, and especially if it received any chemical treatment.

As folks dropped their trees off, Randy McFarling, also with PVFD Engine No. 4, explained the difference between chemically treating and not treating the trees. Some folks didn‰??t realize there was a difference. Most trees come with a small package of powder to be added to the first watering of the tree when it arrives home, he said.
