BREA (CBSLA) ‰?? Homes around an aerospace manufacturing firm in Brea were briefly evacuated Thursday morning after a fire led to a hazmat situation.

A fire was reported at Bristol Industries, 630 E. Lambert Road, at about 3 a.m., prompting the evacuation of homes near the structure fire due to hazardous materials concerns. Residents were allowed to return to their homes at about 7 a.m.

The Boundary County Sheriff's Office in Idaho is investigating a trail derailment after the engine went into the Kootenai River with train personnel trapped inside.

The derailment happened around 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday in a remote area about 10 miles east of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, on the main line, according to TV station KREM in Spokane, Washington. Two crew members were inside and have been rescued, according to a spokesperson from BNSF Railway. No one was injured.

The Boundary County Emergency Management Office reports that the lead engine was only accessible by water and the rescue crews were able to reach the engine and safely retrieve the train operators from the top of the engine. None of the train operators were injured in the derailment.

The lead engine is currently leaking diesel fuel into the Kootenai River and containment booms have been spread across the river in multiple places. No other hazardous materials are leaking from the train cars.

BNSF has hazmat cleanup crews responding from multiple locations who will be taking over containment and cleanup when they arrive. Three locomotives have been derailed. It has been confirmed by a BNSF railway spokesperson that the engine is in the river. The train was carrying mixed freight.

Nearly a week after a major fire in Sakinaka‰??s Ashapura industrial estate killed two, mayor Kishori Pednekar on Thursday said factories or commercial spaces dealing with hazardous chemicals or storing the same should not be located in densely populated areas.

‰??The fire at Saki Naka was huge and it could have been dangerous, but the Mumbai fire brigade brought the same under control in time. I am of the opinion that factories that have to deal with hazardous chemicals should be located outside areas that are densely populated,‰?? said the mayor after conducting her first review meeting with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials since she took charge of the post.

On December 27, around 5.15pm, a fire broke out at Ashapura compound, an industrial estate at Khairani Road, killing Aarti Jaiswal, 25, and Piyush Pithadia, 42.

The fire brigade is still searching for 42-year-old worker, Pratap Thakkar, who went missing. ‰??We are still conducting search operations considering we have not rescued one missing person yet. We are using sniffer dogs to trace the missing person or his remains,‰?? said a fire brigade official.

FRANCE TO BAN 36 GLYPHOSATE PRODUCTS BY END OF 2020

The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) is banning more than half of the nation‰??s glyphosate-containing herbicide products. Of the 69 products currently available in France, 36 will be withdrawn from the market immediately and their use forbidden by the end of 2020, ‰??due to a lack or absence of scientific data ruling out any genotoxic risk‰??. These products account for nearly 75% by weight of glyphosate-based products sold in France last year for agricultural and other uses.

The ANSES also denied authorisation to four new products and said it will make its decision on three remaining products under review by the end of 2020.

The national regulation follows the European Union‰??s 2017 decision to renew glyphosate‰??s authorisation as an active ingredient in products for another five years.

‰??In the European Union, active substances are approved at the EU level, but member states are in charge of deciding on the authorisation of the final products that contain these active substances,‰?? says Herman Lelieveldt from University College Roosevelt in the Netherlands. ‰??French president [Emmanuel] Macron already announced that he would like to ban the substance in a couple of years, and only retracted from that after pressure from farmers. France is not the only member state wanting to do this.‰?? In 2018, France, Belgium, Greece, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Malta asked the EU Commission to investigate alternatives to glyphosate-based products.
