PORTLAND, Oregon ‰?? As firefighters deal with a shortage of disposable personal protective equipment, many local departments are turning to reusable hazmat suits and masks when responding to medical calls. Portland Fire & Rescue is training its crews to wear them and wants the public to be prepared for the new look.

‰??Our intention is certainly not to freak anyone out,‰?? said Lt. Rich Chatman. ‰??We just want to show people what it is so they're not scared of it‰?| our fire chief has made the health and safety of our firefighters top priority.‰??

Chatman said crews will be wearing full face masks includes a filter that offers even better protection than the N95 masks that are in short supply. When firefighters suit up will depend on the call, specifically how close crews estimate they‰??ll get to patients. Chatman said about 75% of the calls firefighters respond to are medical.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Merced Police have arrested a man after a powder he spread at the Merced County Human Services Agency sparked fears of a possible hazmat situation.

After emergency crews rushed to the scene, the yellowish powder turned out to be sulfur, which is non-hazardous.

Robert Moore has been arrested and booked on two counts of criminal threats.

Police say Moore was identified through surveillance footage and that he confessed to placing the powder, although he did not explain why he did so.

E-cigarette liquids and vapors contain metals and metalloids at levels likely to be harmful to people‰??s health, and people who vape have higher levels of these elements in their blood and other bodily fluids than cigarette and cigar smokers do, according to a review of data from 24 studies (Environ. Health Perspect. 2020, DOI: 10.1289/EHP5686).

These smoking devices use a metal coil to heat a nicotine solution, generating a vapor. The coil itself is a metal source; so are solders inside the liquid reservoir. Several of the studies show that total metal levels rise after the liquid in these devices gets heated, lending support to the theory that the heating process is what releases the elements. Further, the metal levels in the aerosols that users inhale tend to be higher than those in the liquids.

Studies of samples from users, including blood and urine, showed that e-cigarettes are a source of exposure to a large list of metals, including lead and arsenic. With the exception of cadmium, e-cigarette users had more of all metals studied in their bodily fluids than smokers did. Metal exposure can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases; it can also directly damage lung tissue.

On February 13, 2020, at 6:54 a.m. eastern standard time, CSX Transportation (CSX) freight train K42911, a high-hazard flammable key train carrying denatured ethanol, derailed in Draffin, Kentucky.[1] The derailment occurred at milepost 123.8 of the CSX Kingsport Subdivision, along a hillside adjacent to the Russell Fork River. (See figure.) The engineer and the conductor sustained minor injuries. The train consisted of 3 lead locomotives, [2] buffer cars, and 96 loaded tank cars. It was 6,045 feet long and weighed 13,172 trailing tons. The derailment involved all three locomotives, one buffer car, and four loaded tank cars. Two of the derailed tank cars were breached and released 38,400 gallons of denatured ethanol. The ethanol and diesel fuel from the locomotives ignited and caught fire, which engulfed the locomotives and the second and third tank cars.

Prior to the derailment the area received a substantial amount of rain, which led to a landslide that covered the tracks with debris. According to the train crew, the debris from the landslide was as high as the nose of the lead locomotive. The engineer stated that sight distance had been around five car lengths due to rain, fog, curves, and darkness. According to wireless uploads from the train‰??s energy management system (or trip optimizer), the train had been traveling at a speed between 24 and 25 mph, which was within the operational speed of the tracks.2 The tracks were not equipped with positive train control, nor were they required to have the system in place.[3]

Following the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has warned Nigerians to beware of how they use hand sanitizer, saying such contain chemical that can cause fire disaster.

Addressing newsmen Wednesday in Abuja as the Service mark this year‰??s Fire Safety Week, the Controller incharge of Inspectorate, Investigation and Enforcement, Olola Abdulganiyu Jaji, cautioned against misuse of the hand sanitizer.

‰??Some of these hand sanitizers contain chemical and it has implication, if it contact with fire it can bring about outbreak of fire seriously, that is why Nigerians should be conscious of it usage.

‰??We have seen people putting hand sanitizer outside the door of their house, which means the oxigen and the chemical it contains will not be spread inside the room.‰??

MANILA, Philippines ‰?? Amid the worsening novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country, chemical safety watchdog group on Tuesday urged consumers to be vigilant when buying rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizer products.

According to the EcoWaste Coalition, using unverified products could be counterproductive as they could lull customers into a false sense of security despite not actually keeping them safe from COVID-19.

CHEMICAL SAFETY BOARD ACCIDENTAL RELEASES RULE IN EFFECT

Under a new rule effective on Monday, March 23, 2020, owners and operators of stationary sources are required to report qualifying accidental releases to the ambient air of hazardous substances to the federal Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB). While many companies are currently consumed with handling operations and logistics related to the coronavirus pandemic, compliance will still be expected going forward. Importantly, however, the CSB‰??s preamble to the new rule expresses a one-year grace period from the effective date of the rule, during which it will refrain from referring reporting violations for enforcement absent a knowing failure to report.

The extent of this reporting obligation will vary depending on whether reporting to the National Response Center (NRC) is also required and has been accomplished. Detailed reporting to the CSB may be required for certain accidental releases. However, if a release report has already been submitted to the NRC pursuant to the federal Comprehensive Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), a facility need only submit the NRC identification number to the CSB.

Schools in Slovakia lack a deeper education and training in chemical security. It is not mandatory to educate students about chemical security during their studies at any educational level. An increasing number of terrorist attacks involving chemicals have highlighted a big gap in this area of education. Slovakia, as part of Central and Eastern Europe, can play an important role in chemical security. This paper presents the results of the current situation of chemical security in Slovak schools. There are 167 middle schools, high schools, and universities that comprise a representative sample of schools in the entire Slovakia. The situation is comparable to other countries but requires several improvements in this field. This paper also presents recommendations to the schools and the government. On the basis of the results achieved in the framework of the statistical research provided within this paper, the results will be implemented in Slovak study programs as well as futu!
re scientific and research work.

ORGANISATIONS MOBILISE TO FIGHT COVID-19

Across the world businesses, organisations and individuals are taking extraordinary steps to support the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The effort spans multinational chemical and luxury goods suppliers, distilleries, 3D printing services and university technicians. Together, they‰??re addressing shortages in the most in-demand items: hand sanitiser, personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilators and diagnostic tests.

Essential equipment
Universities are lending a hand by donating PPE to hospitals from labs that have been closed down by Covid-19 quarantine measures. It seems an obvious way for universities to assist, but communication channels between the two communities are not well-established. In York, the effort was started when a PhD student in the archaeology department reached out to the chief nurse for the York Pandemic Ops Group.
