[DCHAS-L] EPA: Asbestos Draft Risk Evaluation Available for Public and Scientific Review
As I predicted in my September 2018 newsletter (ACTS FACTS), the new EPA SNUR (significant new use rule) would enable EPA to approve use of asbestos products again. The public relations announcement from EPA and the administration when the new rule was instituted was that this was a way to finally formally ban asbestos. Snopes and I said it would be used for the exact opposite purpose and here we go.
The six products being evaluated are chlor-alkali diaphragms, sheet gaskets, brake blocks, aftermarket automotive brakes/linings, other vehicle friction products, and other gaskets. The PR release says that: "In the draft risk evaluation, EPA did not find unreasonable risk to the environment under any of the conditions of use."
And note that this is the first of 10 chemicals that will undergo the risk evaluation under the amended TSCA rule.
This is what EPA fills it's time with while we struggle with COVID-19.
