I have learned this many times as well. The trades people I work with rely
on intuition and informal peer sharing of information both in doing their
jobs and assessing the priorities of the people they work with and this
combination can be remarkably accurate.

Another unconscious signal I have experienced as part of a permanent safety
program is that impact of the geographic location of the safety office
relative to campus. Upper admin routinely wants to move support services
"out of the way" of the main campus activities. This can cut the safety
office off from informal information which can be quite valuable in
foreseeing significant trends in the workplace. In addition, being just a
mile off campus results in a significant time lag between a call for help
and the response time.

Happily, at Keene State, I'm a 5 minute walk from all campus activities and
I have seen other campus EHS department leverage similar advantages as part
of their success.
