ACS Matters - Your Source for the Latest News & Events from the American Chemical Society

April 21, 2020
Dear ACS Members,

During these unprecedented times, we are more grateful than ever to have such a strong community of members committed to the field of chemistry, and we want you to know that we are here to support you. That's why, effective today, April 21, 2020, and for the duration of the crisis, we are offering renewing members a one-year waiver on your unpaid national dues if you've suffered hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you have become unemployed, furloughed, have your hours or wages reduced, or are facing illness or family care responsibilities, please contact Member Services at service**At_Symbol_Here**acs.org or via phone at 1-800-333-9511 (1-614-447-3776 for members outside the U.S. and Canada).

Thank you and please continue to practice good hygiene recommendations such as proper hand washing and physical distancing. Please stay safe!

Join ACS members and chemists from around the world this week in honoring Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW). You're invited to participate in virtual activities and educational events with a common goal: communicate the positive role that chemistry plays for maintaining a healthy environment. During CCEW 2020, ACS is exploring various topics associated with this year's theme, "Protecting Our Planet through Chemistry."

Here are the best ways to participate in #CCEW and #EarthDay2020 this week:

Understanding the Novel Coronavirus
The special online resource center on ACS Efforts and Resources on COVID-19 has been refreshed and updated! It's newly organized and more user-friendly, suitable for sharing with your scientific colleagues and non-chemist neighbors alike.

  • Share Chemistry - Resources to help improve the understanding of coronavirus research.
  • Network & Connect - Finding ways to support and empower our members during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Educate - Opportunities to aid in effective chemistry and chemistry-related education to support the transition to remote teaching and learning.
  • Communicate - Information to help communicate about the coronavirus with the public, policymakers and the media.
  • Virtual Events & Training - Upcoming events, online training and related resources to support the chemistry enterprise.
In the most recent edition of GP Chemist, ACS's magazine for chemistry grads and postdocs, contributing editor Joerg Schlatterer notes that although the current global challenge has a bitter short-term impact on our everyday lives, there might be positives as well. "As Ph.D.s, we can rediscover that our unique set of competencies have the potential to make a difference to the world. Some of us advance knowledge that helps unravel how viruses such as COVID-19 work. Others gain understanding into more basic principles related to COVID-19, such as RNA replication, folding, and structure." Read the full essay, which also includes links to useful professional and wellbeing resources, on the GP Chemist website.
Scientific Research on COVID-19

This overview of published information on global research and development of coronavirus-related therapeutic agents and preventive vaccines is based on the extensive CAS content collection, with a focus on patents. Published by ACS Central Science, the report is open access.

Coronavirus research published across the more than 60 peer-reviewed ACS journals, compiled in a free-to-read virtual issue. Preprint coronavirus research is also available on ChemRxiv.
This free-to-read virtual issue from Environmental Science & Technology and Environmental Science & Technology Letters provides insight into the current state of knowledge on the persistence and behavior of enveloped viruses - such as COVID-19 - in the environment. Access all articles in the virtual issue.

Visit the ACS website for more links to resources and trustworthy scientific information about COVID-19 and coronavirus.

ADVANCE & LEARN WITH ACS
The newly launched SciMeetings platform now gives the scientific community a digital platform to view the research that was planned on being presented at the ACS Spring 2020 National Meeting & Exposition in Philadelphia.

There have been a number of posters and presentations that have been uploaded to SciMeetings, and on April 27 ACS is excited to announce the kick-off of this new platform with a social media event, #ACSSciMeet.

This one-day event, taking place on Twitter and Instagram, will enable presenters to share their posters and presentations, network, and engage in discussions with the scientific research community. Stay up to date with all the latest information by following **At_Symbol_Here**AmerChemSociety and #ACSSciMeet on Twitter and Instagram.
During this time of social distancing, ACS is expanding its commitment to providing the scientific community with relevant information from subject matter experts.

As part of that commitment, this week ACS Webinars begins offering FREE daily webinars on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and rebroadcasts of professional development topics from its archives on Mondays and Fridays. Here's a look at this week's lineup:
Check out the upcoming schedule of FREE live broadcasts, as well as our expansive ACS Webinars archive for more career guidance, updates on the latest research, and many other topics.
The ACS Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Roundtable invites proposals for its 2020 research grants, investigating key research challenges faced by the pharmaceutical industry.

Grant topics include: Increasing the Utility of Surfactant-Based Chemistry in Water Methodologies: Oligonucleotide Processes; Development of New Membrane Technologies; Greener Peptide and Peptide Conjugate Synthesis; and Ignition Grant Program for Green Chemistry and Engineering Research. Proposals are accepted from public and private institutions of higher education worldwide and must be submitted by 5:00 PM ET (GMT-4) on June 1, 2020. For more information on all grants and to download full RFPs, please visit the grants homepage.
The ACS Office of Research Grants and the Council for Undergraduate Research invite you to participate in "Writing Grant Proposals and PRF Funding Opportunities for PUIs," a webinar taking place on Tuesday, April 28, at 2:00 PM ET.

This webinar will cover basic grant writing tips, the proposal evaluation process, and Petroleum Research Fund (PRF) funding opportunities directed specifically to primarily undergraduate institutions. The webinar is recommended both for professors who are seeking research program funding and for institution grant officers. Get more information and register online today!
The next event in the AGRO Lunch & Learn Webinar Series is "The Role of Pesticides to Protect Public Health and the Food Supply," on May 13, 12:00-1:00 PM ET. The presenter will be Dr. Eliza Dunn, M.D., of Bayer, an emergency medicine physician and medical toxicologist with a long-standing interest in global health. After completing her Toxicology Fellowship at NYU in 2006, Dr. Dunn returned to Washington University in St. Louis and started an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Medical Toxicology.

Over the following decade, she became increasingly involved with global health and humanitarian relief projects. In July of 2016, she started working as the Medical Outreach Lead for Monsanto, now Bayer Crop Science, a global seed company with innovative technology that has great potential to remediate malnutrition. She remains on the faculty of Washington University and is an active member of the Toxicology team there. She lectures nationally and internationally on a diverse range of topics in medical toxicology and global health. Register online today!

PHUN & GAMES
Now that spring has arrived, and while we're all busy social distancing, it's likely we'll all be spending more time in the garden. One of the recent Periodic Graphics features in C&EN took a look at what's in the fertilizers we add to our gardens at this time of year, and how they help plants grow. Check out the full graphic on the C&EN web site, where you'll also find links to the references that science educator and Compound Interest blogger Andy Brunning used to create the graphic.

To see more of Brunning's work, go to compoundchem.com. To see all of C&EN's Periodic Graphics, visit cenm.ag/periodicgraphics.
