MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS5) -- Three family members had to be taken to the hospital Saturday night after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning at their Mesa home.

The incident was initially called out as a possible drowning, but was later determined to be a hazmat situation. Mesa fire officials say two family members were drinking in a closed garage with a running car at a home near Lindsay Road and University Drive. Both of them were suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Crews began "rapid, advanced life support," and quickly transported a 28-year-old man to the hospital in critical condition.

Hazmat crews responded to monitor the garage and house, both of which were determined to have very high levels of carbon monoxide. Crews quickly worked to evacuate and treat other family members. Two other people were transported to the hospital.

MILAN (Reuters) - An explosion at a chemicals plant in an industrial zone in Venice injured two workers and sent clouds of black smoke and flames into the sky on Friday, prompting local authorities to order residents to stay inside and close doors and windows.

Gianpaolo Bottacin, an official from the civil protection department, said the two workers had suffered serious burn injuries in the blast, which occurred in the Porto Marghera area on the mainland, a few kilometres from the historic centre of the lagoon city.

RAI state television and other local media reported the explosion hit speciality chemicals group 3V Sigma. No comment was immediately available from the company.

Ambulances and fire services as well as officials from environmental agency ARPAV were at the scene and television footage showed clouds of thick black smoke visible from several kilometres away.

‰??The area is blocked off at the moment, which means the fire won‰??t get out of the company site, but inside that area it‰??s hard to imagine it will be put out any time soon,‰?? Bottacin told a news briefing.

AVON, Ohio ‰?? Interstate 90 is closed in both directions Sunday evening after a tanker truck carrying alcohol overturned on the freeway.

The highway is closed between the Ohio Route 61 exit in Avon and the Ohio Route 254 in Sheffield Village, Avon police said in a news release.

The crash happened about 4 p.m., the news release states. There was a leak from the tanker truck, prompting a hazmat team to be called to the scene.

HEALTH WORKERS RISK EXPOSURE TO DANGEROUS CHEMICALS BY REUSING PROTECTIVE GEAR

Health workers in the US may be exposing themselves to dangerous chemicals by disinfecting and reusing their protective equipment, experts have warned.

Hospitals and other facilities have dealt with an extreme shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), including N95 masks, gloves and gowns, by reusing equipment that would usually be discarded after use.

A range of practices to decontaminate equipment have been adopted, from storing equipment in paper bags for days, to using UV light and chemical disinfectants.

At Saint Catherine of Siena medical center, a hospital on Long Island, New York, healthcare workers reported spraying their reusable gowns with Virex II 256, a highly potent cleaner marketed for ‰??hard, inanimate, nonporous surfaces‰?? such as floors and walls.

In Colorado, health workers said they had been wiping down their face shields so frequently with the disinfectant CaviWipes that they became opaque.

AMERICAN AIRLINES HANGAR INVOLVED IN FOAMING INCIDENT

A foaming incident occurred after a fire extinguishing system was activated in American Airlines hangar, at Chicago O‰??Hare International Airport (ORD) yesterday.

At the time of the incident, two American Airlines Boeing 787s, registration unknown, were parked at the hangar. It is unclear if any additional aircraft were in the hangar at the same time.

Source says that the automated fire suppression system was activated by accident. In the video below, it is possible to see the huge quantity of fire retardant foam falling on the aircraft. There is no report of any injuries.

A fire suppression system is mandatory in maintenance hangars; it can fill the hanger in minutes and prevents a fire from spreading to any aircraft, also minimising any damage to the building itself.

This incident could be very expensive for American Airlines. Fire retardant foam, like the one in the images, is highly corrosive to an aircraft; this is due to the chemical components that help extinguish the flames. All the parts affected by the foam need to be carefully analysed and then cleaned.

FIRE, EXPLOSION IN LOS ANGELES INJURES 11 FIREFIGHTERS

LOS ANGELES (AP) ‰?? An explosion Saturday at a hash oil manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles injured 11 firefighters who had gone inside the building after an initial report of a fire and then had to run for their lives when a ball of flames shot out the building and scorched a fire truck across the street.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said ‰??one significant explosion" shook the neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. Firefighters inside had to run through a wall of flames he estimated as 30 feet high and wide, and those on the roof scrambled down a ladder that was engulfed in fire.

He said people at the scene described the explosion as sounding like a freight train or jet engine. The fleeing firefighters tore off their protective equipment that had burned and helmets that melted, Scott said.

‰??The was one of the worst scene's I've seen," he said.

Scott said the building was a warehouse for SmokeTokes, which he described as a maker of ‰??butane honey oil." Butane is an odorless gas that easily ignites, and it's used in the process to extract the high-inducing chemical THC from cannabis plants to create a highly potent concentrate also known as hash oil. The oil is used in vape pens, edibles, waxes and other products.

Seven units from Ennis and Shannon Fire Brigades attended an incident at the grounds of Avara Pharmaceuticals in the Shannon Industrial Estate on Sunday morning.

It is understood that the incident occured after 06:13 on Sunday morning with Shannon Fire Brigade ordered to the site at 07:02 following reports of smoke on the ground floor of a building. Ennis Fire Brigade were also mobilised to the incident as backup.

‰??On attendance, they met with Avara personnel, and a search of the particular building was then carried out by Fire Service personnel wearing Breathing Apparatus. It was determined that there may have been an equipment fault earlier, and the building was then declared safe by the Fire Service,‰?? a spokesperson for Clare County Council told The Clare Echo.

The Clare Echo understands that the fire occurred due to poorly maintained equipment overheating which subsequently filled a production area with smoke, then setting off the main site evacuation alarm.

It is listed by the HSA as a notified Seveso lower tier establishment. ‰??Major industrial accidents involving dangerous substances pose a significant threat to humans and the environment, such accidents can give rise to serious injury to people or serious damage to the environment, both on and off the site of the accident. In Europe, a catastrophic accident in the Italian town of Seveso in 1976 prompted the adoption of legislation on the prevention and control of such accidents,‰?? a statement on the HSA‰??s website reads
