CHICAGO (WLS) -- Firefighters battled an extra-alarm fire early Sunday morning at a chemical plant in the Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, Chicago fire officials said.

According to CFD, around 12:33 a.m. crews were dispatched to a building fire at the Imperial Zinc Corporation in the 1000-block of E. 103rd Street.

Hazmat teams were called in because of the chemicals inside the plant, CFD said.

The fire department tweeted out a photo Sunday morning showing the roof of the building had collapsed.

A warehouse with paints and varnishes and plastic products is on fire in Novosibirsk, the press service of the regional EMERCOM of the Russian Federation reports.

The total combustion area was 1000 square meters. The roof also collapsed on an area of ‰??‰??200 square meters.

The department noted that extinguishing is complicated by the fact that 15 gas cylinders and a large number of other combustible materials are stored in the warehouse.

Now fire and rescue units are preventing the threat of fire spreading to neighboring buildings. For this, a build-up of the group has been organized. A fire train was also sent to the place of emergency.

In total, 73 personnel and 20 pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire. In addition, there is a chemical and radiometric laboratory on site that monitors the state of the environment.

California lawmakers voted Sunday to phase out the sale and use of firefighting foam containing toxic chemicals that have been linked to cancer and have contaminated drinking water throughout the state.

The measure, put forward by state Sen. Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), requires municipal fire departments, chemical plants and oil refineries to gradually stop using the foam, replacing it with alternatives that don‰??t contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a class of chemicals commonly known as PFAS.

Scientists have called PFAS ‰??forever chemicals‰?? because they persist indefinitely and accumulate in the human body. Exposure to them has been linked to kidney and testicular cancer, as well as high levels of cholesterol, thyroid disease and other serious health problems.

Authorities in Oxnard closed down a street in the La Colonia neighborhood for a time Sunday evening after a reported chemical spill.

The incident was reported shortly before 5:40 p.m. near the 200 block of north McKinley Avenue, Ventura County Fire Department reports showed.

The incident involved an estimated 30 gallons of chlorine that spilled in the street, according to Oxnard Police Department officials. Muriatic acid and soda ash were also reported at the scene, authorities said.

One civilian who was exposed to a hazardous material was transported to St. John's Regional Medical Center, firefighters at the scene reported.

Fire bosses this afternoon say the fire at the former paper mill in Mataura is not near the ouvea premix which is stored on the site.

‰??There is no danger of the fire getting near the premix,‰?? incident controller Scott Lindsay said.

The fire is 30 metres away from the premix and down another floor, and is regarded now by the fire service as contained.

The fire was 10m by 10m in size and in a sub-basement area in the hydro generator.

Senegalese authorities are removing about 3,050 tons of ammonium nitrate -- a larger volume of the chemical than involved in the Aug. 4 explosion in Beirut -- from the port of Dakar.

Trucks are moving the hazardous substance to mines in neighboring Mali, Baba Drame, a Senegalese environment ministry official, said Friday. Mali had taken delivery of 700 tons of the chemical as of Aug. 23, which will be stored at the Loulo-Gounkoto gold mine operated by Barrick Gold Corp., its transport ministry said in an earlier statement.

‰??Officials were already aware of the large quantity of ammonium nitrate‰?? at the port since July 28, Drame said by phone from Senegal‰??s capital, Dakar. ‰??After the explosion in Beirut, we decided it was urgent to have it removed,‰?? he said. A London-based Barrick spokesperson declined to comment.

Although the storm was not as bad as once feared, authorities were still warning it could leave people with out running water or power for weeks in the stifling late summer heat. It made roads impassable, tore roofs and walls off buildings and strew debris about.

It also led to fires at a chlorine plant in Westlake in the hard-hit Lake Charles area. On Saturday, crews were battling a new blaze, leading authorities to broaden a shelter-in-place order to 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) around the plant, state Department of Environmental Quality spokesman Greg Langley said.

It was at least the second fire at the BioLab plant, which makes swimming pool chemicals, after crews extinguished one that filled the skyline around Lake Charles with billowing black smoke after Laura hit. Authorities believe chemical reactions are causing the soaked chemicals to overheat and burst into flames.

Langley said he believed the new fire was about 90% out by Saturday afternoon.

The shelter in place means any residents of the industrial area around the plant are to stay inside with windows and doors shut, in summer heat with no electricity to power air conditioners.

The fire at the Biolab chemical manufacturing facility in Lake Charles has been brought under control, a spokesperson for KIK Custom Products announced on Friday, August 28.

Residents within a 1 mile radius of the site were told to shelter in place due to a chlorine leak caused by the fire on Thursday, August 27.

The I-10 bridge was also closed as emergency response teams monitored the area. The roadway reopened on Friday, I-10 East and West in Southwest Louisiana has reopened

The company said on Thursday that the fire occurred as a result of damage sustained during Hurricane Laura which made landfall in Cameron Parish as a Category 4 storm before pushing northward into Lake Charles.

Though initial assessments show limited hurricane damage to the petrochemical hub around Lake Charles, the area's port suffered significant damage, with the road to recovery being dictated by electricity outages, and for some plants by a fire at one nearby chemical plant.

The Port of Lake Charles was running a small command center on generators as of Friday afternoon, waiting for insurance adjusters to arrive this weekend.

"As far as the port properties go, it's pretty devastating," said Port Director Richard Self. "It's going to put us down for a while."

FOX CROSSING ‰?? A shipping business had to be evacuated Friday after a chemical spill.

The Fox Crossing Fire Department responded to a business at 2100 Holly Road for a report that a 300-gallon tote of organic peroxide had been punctured and was leaking onto the loading dock floor. R and L Carriers, a freight shipping and logistics company, is listed at that address, according to the company's website.

Firefighters helped get employees out of the building and to a safe location. Several employees were checked for chemical exposure at the scene, according to the Fox Crossing Fire Department.
