PROCESS SAFETY IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY‰??PART I: THERMAL AND REACTION HAZARD EVALUATION PROCESSES AND TECHNIQUES

Process safety groups in the pharmaceutical industry are important components of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) development through its life cycle from discovery to commercial scale. The pharmaceutical process safety laboratory staff conduct a series of tests to identify chemically unstable reagents, intermediates and solvents, and mixtures to ensure that the proposed operating conditions provide a sufficient safety margin from the onset of undesired and potentially catastrophic thermal decomposition. Across several pharmaceutical companies, the methods used for these assessments and how results and conclusions are made are widespread (vide infra). A working group was created with members from several pharmaceutical companies within the International Consortium for Innovation and Quality in Pharmaceutical Development (IQ), with the goal of precompetitive collaboration and to understand each of the participating companies‰?? procedures and assessment regarding process!
safety. Each company was invited to provide input using a blind survey format. This was done in the interest of making this knowledge accessible for the participating companies and the wider community of other pharma and chemical companies and even academic institutions in the US and throughout the world. This article provides the results of this in-depth survey of the members of the IQ Consortium thermal hazard working group. General issues around different tools used to assess thermal hazard risk and questions regarding staffing and tech transfer of process safety data/information from development to manufacturing were addressed. A snapshot of how various assessment strategies are employed as a function of stage of development (early, mid, and late) is also presented.

Dewey Beach is closed until further notice, the town announced Friday.

Coagulated tar balls from the oil spill that occurred in the Delaware Bay this week are present on the sand, and are being treated as a hazmat risk by the Coast Guard and state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

DNREC and the Coast Guard, which has hired a contractor to help with oil spill cleanup, have been working this week to clean the spill, which has affected about 11 miles of coastline. Investigators are working on finding who is responsible for the spill.

The city of Lewes also closed its beaches on Thursday in response to oil that had come ashore. DNREC additionally closed the four-wheel drive surf fishing crossing at Delaware Beach Plum Island Preserve so that vehicles would not track oil onto the sand, the agency said in a news release.

SALEM, Ore. ‰?? Federal agencies are ramping up wildfire cleanup efforts in Marion, Linn and other affected Oregon counties to protect residents from potentially hazardous materials on burned properties.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is assembling teams to collect household hazardous materials and ensure they are disposed of properly and safely. The EPA will also set up a Response Staging Area in the Oregon State Fair and Expo Center parking lot, the agency said in a news release.

Response workers will use the temporary staging area to evaluate, organize and consolidate materials that EPA field teams recover. It will also serve as the main assembly, assignment and dispatch point for agency responders and contractors each morning as they head to area worksites.

Five women workers were charred to death and three employees, including a man, suffered critical burns in a fire accident at Rajalakshmi Fireworks under the T. Kallupatti police station limits in Madurai district on Friday.

....
Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Madurai and Virudhunagar districts, led by Deputy Director (Southern region) P. Saravanakumar, rushed to the spot and put out the fire that had spread from the chemical mixing room to two working sheds.

High temperature
Officials suspect that mixing of chemicals under high atmospheric temperature on a hot afternoon could have triggered an explosion in the mixing room around 2 p.m.

‰??A blast in the chemical mixing room is suspected to have caused the fire,‰?? Madurai Collector T.G. Vinay said. The unit had a licence valid till March 2021. The number of employees working in the unit was within the permitted limit. ‰??An inspection by explosives experts will reveal the actual cause and whether there was any violation of safety rules,‰?? he said.

TRAVERSE CITY, MI ‰?? Residents near the Traverse City airport are being offered bottled water after the state found high levels of toxic PFAS chemicals near a neighborhood where multiple homes still rely on private groundwater wells despite the presence of city water mains.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) is holding a virtual meeting Monday, Oct. 26 to present investigation results from a line of monitoring wells north of Cherry Capital Airport in East Bay Township.

The state found the compound PFOS at 17,900 parts-per-trillion (ppt) in a groundwater monitoring well near the corner of Parsons Road and Aero Park Drive, which leads into an industrial park near the airport and U.S. Coast Guard Station.

State and local authorities worry that about 20 homes in the Pine Grove neighborhood between Parsons Road and Munson Avenue that draw groundwater from private wells for drinking may have been exposed to the contaminants, which are linked to chronic health problems and certain cancers.

Since March, the 970 students at Burlington High School have had only one day of in-person education: Their first day, in September, before the discovery of airborne PCBs ‰?? carcinogenic chemicals ‰?? shuttered the building for the fall.

Sara Farnsworth‰??s son, a freshman at BHS, was ‰??super excited‰?? on that first day. Now, facing indefinite remote learning, ‰??he is struggling,‰?? his mother said, and as a single parent of two, working outside of the home has become impossible. The district promises a return to in-person learning by the spring, but Farnsworth is worried. ‰??We‰??re just losing time,‰?? Farnsworth said. ‰??I think that even waiting until January [to return] is too long.‰??

Farnsworth is part of a group of parents pushing for the reopening of Burlington High School, despite elevated levels of PCBs found throughout the building. The ‰??Open BHS‰?? coalition, according to its website, has 131 members ‰??and counting.‰?? At school board meetings, some Open BHS parents have claimed that the levels of PCBs recorded at the high school are safe for students and staff, blaming the Vermont Department of Health for holding the school to ‰??stringent‰?? health standards.
