Roughly 30 residents and six pets were temporarily evacuated from an apartment complex in Riverside after firefighters caught a strong smell of chlorine after putting out a closet fire Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

City of Riverside firefighters were called to the 45-unit University Gardens complex in the 3700 block of Cranford Avenue just after noon regarding a structure fire in a maintenance closet with cleaning supplies near the pool, Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst said.

Firefighters noticed the smell after knocking down the fire and evacuated occupied apartments while a hazmat team was called, Vanderhorst said. They later determined the odor came from pool cleaning tablets in a storage room, and people were allowed back into the area by 4:30 p.m.

‰??Thankfully we didn‰??t have anybody displaced,‰?? Vanderhorst said. ‰??All residents were allowed back into their apartments and workers were allowed to go in and work on maintenance.‰??

The fire was located on the first floor of the three-story building. Its cause remained unclear Tuesday evening, Vanderhorst said.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with a minor injury caused by the chlorine. No residents were injured, he said.

The intersection at Groat Road and 111 Avenue was closed down to both vehicles and pedestrians during part of the Tuesday evening commute, as emergency officials ‰?? including a hazardous materials team ‰?? dealt with an incident at an apartment building nearby.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said fire and hazmat crews were called just before 5 p.m. to the building across the road from Westmount Shopping Centre in the Inglewood neighbourhood.

A spokesperson said the incident was due to an ‰??improper mixture of household items‰?? in a suite, but did not provide details on what items those were.

Orange County Emergency Management and Kansas City Southern Officials were making final preparations Monday to transport two train cars containing the hazardous material ethylene oxide from the site of a derailment that occurred last Thursday.

‰??They were putting those cars back on the tracks, and replacing the wheel system underneath it this morning,‰?? Orange County Judge John Gothia, who serves as the director of the Orange County Office of Emergency Management, told The Enterprise. ‰??And then as soon as they get those wheel systems back underneath those cars, they are going to put them on the track and get them moved to another location.‰??

The careful method of transportation is due to the flammable nature of the gas, which is used to produce other chemicals such as antifreeze and in smaller amounts as a pesticide and sterilizing agent.

Other chemicals that were being transported when the train derailed, such as monoethanolamine are being pumped out of the cars to be disposed of in the meantime.

LAHORE: A fire broke out in a warehouse in Badami Bagh and reduced goods, machines and furniture to ashes here on Monday.

Old plastic items were stored in a large quantity in the single-storey warehouse situated at Ahmad Park of Dada Nagar. As dense smoke billowed out from the premises, the workers rushed out and alerted police and Rescue 1122.

Witnesses told the media that the huge fire engulfed the entire warehouse in no time due to the presence of inflammable material and chemical inside. The owner faced a huge loss as the rescue work began late despite the authorities having been informed on time, they said.

Huge flames followed by dense smoke could be seen from a distance, according to video clips circulating on social media. Many locals tried to put off the fire, but to no avail.

When chemistry PhD student Shiva Dastjerdi burned herself in a lab accident, she assumed her school would cover her medical bills. Isn‰??t that what employers do? As it turns out, university policies about workers‰?? compensation don‰??t always include graduate students. Interviews with students, professors, university officials, and lawyers across the US reveal that whether graduate students are considered employees‰??and are thus eligible for workers‰?? compensation‰??is far from clear. Consequently, when accidents happen, they can leave students recovering from significant injuries while facing huge medical bills. And PhD students may not have any idea.
