UNSAFE TO DRINK: WILDFIRES THREATEN RURAL CALIFORNIA TOWNS WITH TAINTED WATER

For more than a month after a wildfire raced through his lakeside community and destroyed his Napa County home, Kody Petrini couldn‰??t drink the water from the taps. He wasn‰??t even supposed to boil it.

And, worried about harming his 16-month-old, Petrini wouldn‰??t wash his youngest son Levi with it. Instead, he took the extraordinary precaution of bathing him in bottled water.

This story originally appeared in CalMatters, an independent public interest journalism venture covering California state politics and government.

Among the largest wildfires in California history, the LNU Lightning Complex fires killed five people and destroyed nearly 1,500 structures ‰?? including whole blocks of the Berryessa Highlands neighborhood where Petrini‰??s home stood.

Camped out in a trailer on his in-laws‰?? nearby lot, the 32-year-old father of two, along with all of his neighbors, was warned not to drink the water or boil it because it could be contaminated with dangerous compounds like benzene that seep into pipes in burned areas.

When wildfires spread across California, they leave a cascade of water problems in their wake: Some communities have their drinking water poisoned by toxic substances. Others wrestle with ash and debris washed into reservoirs and lakes. And many living in remote stretches of the state struggle with accessing enough water to fight fires.

An employee at Kingspan, which made combustible insulation used on Grenfell Tower, complained two years before the disaster that its fire performance claims were ‰??stretching the truth‰??, the public inquiry into the disaster has heard.

Ivor Meredith, a technical project manager at the company, told the inquiry he was uncomfortable with how its phenolic foam insulation was being marketed and was under pressure to get test results that would prove it was safe.

‰??We were struggling to get the technology to pass, to justify our lie,‰?? he said in a witness statement.

Meredith was fired for gross misconduct in 2015, and when he appealed against his dismissal he told the company: ‰??I have been put in a situation where I have had to maintain performance that perhaps our products don‰??t deserve.‰??

He is the first executive from Kingspan to give evidence to the inquiry‰??s investigation into the manufacture, testing and marketing of the materials used in the disastrous refurbishment. The 14 June 2017 fire in west London killed 72 people.

ORIGINAL STORY: Firefighters and law enforcement officials remained uncertain Monday afternoon just when Highway 99 would reopen near the Tulare-Fresno County line after an early-morning train derailment tossed tank cars full of toxic chemicals off the tracks near Goshen.

im S. McMahan, a Union Pacific railroad spokesman, said the crash took place about 6:45 a.m. and six cars derailed on the southbound freight. Four cars carried butane and two carried hydrochloric acid. McMahan said one tank car released five gallons of hydrochloric acid but is no longer leaking. He added that there were no injuries.

He added that the cause of the derailment is under investigation.

PORT NECHES, Texas ‰?? The recovery process from the TPC explosion is still ongoing, even nearly one year after it happened.
The de-inventory process is now complete, TPC Group said in a statement Monday, Nov. 23.
Crews were able to mitigate remnants left at the site that could pose a risk to the community without further incident, the company said.
"The first phase of the demolition is well underway to safely remove debris, clear streets and remove damaged equipment," TPC Group said in the statement.
TPC Group said they expect this first phase to be completed by early 2021. The company also said they are continuing to work with regulatory agencies and insurance providers and attorneys.
