As readers of this post know I am a confirmed opponent of most demonstrations as needlessly dangerous. NFPA 45 specifically requires a barrier between any demonstration and the students in 12.2.1.

12.2.1* Where instructors are performing demonstrations or

students are conducting experiments using hazardous materials,

the instructor shall be required to perform a documented

hazard risk assessment, provide a safety briefing to students,

provide adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), and

place a safety barrier (as required) between students and the

demonstration or experiment to prevent personal injury.

In addition, I’d require a full face shield and gloves along with use of tongs as has already been suggested. And better yet, I’d just not do it (or show it).

Hi all--I'd appreciate any thoughts on someone wearing just eye protection for this demo. On the one hand, it's a small amount and the test tubes don't have constricted necks. On the other hand, it looks like a glass tube held in bare hands near the face.

It's been suggested as something to post in C&EN's "Chemistry in Pictures" collection for New Year's Eve, and I need to decide by tomorrow (Wednesday 12/30) whether to go ahead.

Thanks for your input!
