Thank you, Marta.

For many years the Division of Chemical Education, NSTA, DIVCHAS, CCCS, and Flinn Scientific have issued guidelines for chemical demonstrations.  This particular list from CCCS is quite useful. However, except for the Flinn Scientific videos (which are not as detailed as I would prefer),  no one teaches a potential demonstrator the proper way to perform chemical demonstrations.  Past programs such as the Institute for Chemical Education (ICE), Hope College, and the Dreyfus Institute did teach proper techniques, but these did not survive past the 1990s due to lack of available grant funds. There may be some specific courses at some colleges or universities that do so, but I am personally not aware of them.

Best regards,

David

Jyllian and All:

The discussion about this demo reminded me about the rubric authored by the Committee on Chemical Safety in collaboration with NSTA that describes criteria for considering the pedagogical role of a demonstration and determining whether it meets or exceeds best practices for safety. Please have a look at this resource at https://www.acs.org/content/dam/acsorg/about/governance/committees/chemicalsafety/publications/acs-2019-safety-rubric-assessing-chemical-demonstration-videos.pdf

With the best wishes for a healthy and more open 2021. I am very grateful for your expertise and commitment to safety and safety education.

Many, many thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my query! You all are always helpful and generous with your time, but I truly did not expect so many responses so quickly this particular week. You confirmed what I suspected, and C&EN won't promote the video by including it in Chemistry in Pictures.

Best wishes to everyone for 2021,

Jyllian
