VISALIA ‰?? Three hospital employees had to be decontaminated last week after a patient exposed them to a powerful pesticide.

Just before 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 16, a patient who had accidentally ingested organophosphate, vomited in the hospital in the Emergency Department. Kaweah Delta spokesperson Laura Florez-McCusker said the chemical created a noxious gas exposing three hospital staff members who immediately complained of minor dizziness, headaches and nausea.

Organophosphates are a group of human-made chemicals that poison insects and mammals and are most widely used as insecticides in agriculture, the home, gardens, and veterinary practice. The chemical damages the enzymes in pests which control nerve signals to the body.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, symptoms of organophosphate poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, salivation, watery eyes, and small pupils. Severe symptoms are seizures, slow pulse, difficulty breathing, and coma. Long after exposure, people also can develop nervous system problems such as muscle weakness and numbness and tingling of the hands and feet (neuropathy).

Florez-McCusker said hospital staff immediately isolated the patient and staff and then began decontamination protocols already in place in the hospital. The patient was treated for ingesting the poisonous substance and the employees were discharged a few hours later after being cleared by a physician.

SALT LAKE CITY ‰?? A hazardous materials crew and Salt Lake City firefighters quickly contained a 400-gallon fuel spill at University Hospital in Salt Lake City Wednesday morning.

University Hospital spokeswoman Suzanne Winchester told FOX 13 the spill originated in a central plant on the hospital's east side, close to the emergency department, around 6:30 a.m.

Workers contained the spill in about 90 minutes.

"Something like this could be problematic, particularly when it‰??s over close to the emergency department but, like I said, our emergency management teams have so many protocols in place and are so well prepared for these type of situations that everything went really smoothly and we were really fortunate that this turned out well. But this is something that they practice for and plan for all the time," Winchester said.

A flurry of fires in South Korea caused by the batteries inside Ioniq and Kona EVs may force Hyundai to initiate a global recall on its electric vehicles.

According to multiple South Korean news outlets, the manufacturer is already voluntarily replacing the batteries in local examples but this is yet to be extended overseas. Business Korea says 15 Kona Electric fires have occurred in Korea since the model launched in 2018. Other fires involving Ioniq EVs have also been reported.

The Korean recall involves replacing the entire battery pack, making it one of the first mass battery recalls ever and one of the most expensive recalls involving electric vehicles, with a dent the size of US$900 million reported.

Seventeen months on from a very high profile explosion in the southeast of South Korea and the ship in question remains the source of much conjecture, still unable to leave the Asian nation.

Eighteen people were injured when a fire broke out on two vessels following an explosion on the chemical tanker Stolt Groenland moored at the Korean port of Ulsan in later September 2019.

The fire that broke out after the explosion spread to another chemical tanker, Bow Dalian, which was moored alongside the Stolt vessel. It was reported that the two vessels were conducting a ship-to-ship transfer when the explosion occurred.
