WHEATON, Ill. ‰?? A former chemistry teacher at a suburban Chicago high school has been convicted of reckless conduct for pouring liquid nitrogen on a student during a science demonstration in 2018, injuring the youth.

A DuPage County jury on Tuesday also found Garry Brodersen, 66, guilty of one count of endangering the health or life of a child following a two-day trial, prosecutors said. That charge and the reckless conduct charge are both misdemeanors.

Brodersen, of Carpentersville, was performing a science demonstration in front of a class in May 2018 at Bartlett High School when prosecutors said he poured liquid nitrogen on a male student‰??s chest and groin area. The student suffered burn injuries to a finger and his groin, the state‰??s attorney‰??s office said.

The Ottawa fire department‰??s hazardous materials team tackled a chemical spill at a building just south of Gladstone Avenue on Wednesday.

Crews were called to a one-storey commercial building at 11:19 a.m. A contractor called in to do a cleanup of chemical products in the basement reported that the products had mixed together, creating fumes.

The building and neighbouring buildings were evacuated as the hazmat team went in to do an assessment, Ottawa Fire Services said.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A University of Virginia chemistry building was evacuated in connection with a hazmat situation Wednesday.
Emergency crews were called out to the facility on McCormick Road around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 10.
Officials say no one was hurt.

Smith said as far as the hazmat side of things, they are part of the Alabama Mutual Aid System. They receive funding, equipment and training from the state to respond to events such as the Cahaba Pallet fire.

Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue units and hazmat team went to Bibb County on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, to assist in the firefighting efforts at Cahaba Pallet in Centreville.
The Centreville City Hall's social media post on Facebook said the hazmat team was called in after a drone the Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue used "zoomed in on a potential chemical hazard located directly behind the main building."

Leaders were called in and quickly made the decision to evacuate a half-mile radius of the fire, the social media post continued. Centerville's police chief, a sergeant, and volunteers went door-to-door to inform citizens of the potential danger.

EXPLOSION OF E-CIGARETTE BATTERY INSIDE WORKER'S POCKET COMPARED TO 'FIREWORKS GOING OFF'

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety says a WA mine worker was injured after an electronic cigarette battery spontaneously ignited in his pocket.

Key points:

The electronic cigarette exploded inside the worker's pocket while he was travelling in a light vehicle
The explosion caused severe burns and was compared to "fireworks going off"
Safety regulators say an e-cigarette explosion on a mine site could be "potentially catastrophic"
The worker received severe thermal and chemical burns to his leg from the explosion, which is known as "thermal runaway", when batteries overheat to dangerously high temperatures.

The battery ignited inside a light vehicle, in which two other mine workers were travelling.

Multiple states are pressuring the Department of Defense to address its widespread "forever chemical" problem after the Pentagon admitted hundreds of drinking water systems were contaminated through the use of flame-retardant foam at military bases around the country.

Why it matters: As alarm over the health and environmental impact of these chemicals continues to grow, DoD has said that cleaning the pollution and finding the alternative fire-fighting system that Congress has demanded will cost billions of dollars.

The big picture: Seven states ‰?? New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Vermont ‰?? have passed regulations on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water.

OLD SAYBROOK, CT (WFSB) -- Fire crews were called to the Walmart in Old Saybrook for the report of an unknown odor within the building.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. at the Boston Post Road store.

The fire chief said the odor was coming from acid gas vapors emanating from overheated batteries in a floor scrubber.

It led to 11 people who reported felling sick, but just seven being evaluated for minor irritants. Fire officials initially said they were taken to the hospital, but they later corrected that information.

MEASURING HOW PLASTIC PACKAGING DISRUPTS OUR HORMONES

How do you analyse the effects of potential endocrine disruptors?
I co-ordinate the Marie Curie ITN Protected project, a network that researches the global threat to public health and the environment from endocrine disruptors. As part of that, we grow human cells in the lab and then add the chemicals to them and analyse their effects. We also test chemical mixtures, modelled on the types and concentrations of chemicals that have been found in human blood. This makes our work more realistic to the human situation.
What have you been finding?
In the Protected project, our tests show that endocrine disruptors can affect hormone receptors found within our cells, and even disturb connections between brain cells. Recently my group at Queen‰??s has been assessing chemicals used to replace bisphenol A (BPA), a substance used to make plastics. We have found that some of these replacement chemicals are actually more hormonally active in the lab than BPA.‰??

Herein we report how various metal‰??organic framework (MOF) reaction mixtures behave at elevated temperature and pressure. Adiabatic calorimetry and high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry experiments were conducted to probe the effect of excessive heating of these reaction mixtures to determine the safe working limits. These data demonstrate the safe working limits for certain reactions using DMF, metal, and linker mixtures.

THE SCHLENK LINE GUIDE

Andryj Borys saw a Schlenk line for the first time when he started his PhD. Soon he realised that using it well required very specific skills that, like dark magic and traditional family recipes, seemed extremely secret ‰?? passed along by chemists for generations. The few books on the subject were often outdated and behind paywalls, so Borys decided to take action: based on his own lab notes and drawings, he created the Schlenk Line Survival Guide and shared it online for free.

The project began a few years into Borys‰?? PhD at the University of Kent. ‰??My supervisor, Ewan Clark, started teaching me lots of useful techniques, and I decided to keep detailed step-by-step records,‰?? he explains. The lab treasured them and used them to teach other students. ‰??This really encouraged me to create something more thorough, and make it available to help others,‰?? adds Borys, who is now a postdoc at the University of Bern in Switzerland. Three years after his first encounter with a Schlenk line, he published the guide online. ‰??Since April 2019, the website has received over 100,000 views!‰??
