Thank you for all the terrific suggestions, I very much appreciate it.

FYI, the student is involved in this planning, and we're talking about what items can be manipulated easily and what is problematic. Our solution only needs to be temporary for the semester, until the student can have their "hand" fixed, but I am already envisioning how our eventual solution could be useful in other labs if simply to lessen the chance of an accidental tip over. We have also been in contact with our Disability and Access department and are discussing various options.

Late yesterday afternoon I talked with our 3D printer folks, and I think that we will be able to have some nice stationary bases printed that will allow the student to easily place a graduated cylinder/whatever into the base (basically a more fancy idea than Sheila's suggestion of placing the cylinder into a larger beaker). If we're happy with the result I will share the design(s) with the group.

Bryan, thank you for your offer. Please forgive me if I am using terminology incorrectly; I would say that the terminal device is a body powered, partially-articulated hand with a wrist rotator (this is based on my observations without asking the student about the technical details). The problem is that the "thumb" will not close (and fingers also not working perfectly) because some sort of cable/wiring has loosened or become detached. The student pointed to the problem and said "it just isn't working." They will have it repaired during summer.

Thanks, all!

Pat

Pat,

If I may ask, what style terminal device ("hand") does your student use? Is it myoelectric or body-powered? Hook, simple hand or articulated hand? And does it have a wrist rotator and/or flexor?

I wear a prosthetic myself and as a high school chemistry teacher I'm more or less on my own when managing lab equipment. I've got a lot of experience with a variety of terminal devices, but any advice I've got would depend on the terminal device in use.

Let me know. I'd be happy to help out if I can.

Hi all,

A student's prosthetic hand has been damaged (not lab related) and unfortunately they now have very limited ability to grasp/steady items such as graduated cylinders, flasks, etc. Does anyone know of some sort of countertop item that could help stabilize graduated cylinders and other "tippy" items? I can imagine a few creative designs but I would rather have a commercial ADA-type product if possible. I've done a small bit of online searching but no luck so far; I'm probably not using the correct search words.

Thanks

Pat
