The company operating Oregon‰??s only hazardous waste landfill says it needs room to grow as it anticipates an influx of waste in the years to come.

Military cleanups, federal Superfund sites, firefighter training facilities ‰?? all are among reasons cited by Chemical Waste Management, or CWM, to expand its hazardous waste operation outside the Columbia River town of Arlington.

‰??This is all about planning for the future and protecting the environment,‰?? said CWM spokesperson Jackie Lang, ‰??making sure that dangerous materials and potentially dangerous materials are managed safely in the years ahead.‰??

The current hazardous waste landfill sits on a nearly 1,300-acre plot adjacent to Oregon‰??s largest solid waste landfill run by the same parent company, Waste Management. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines hazardous waste as any solid waste that could harm human health or the environment.

CWM is currently permitted to use 320 acres for hazardous waste disposal. The company wants to add 200 acres of disposal space and will apply to modify its permit with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

MORGAN COUNTY, Utah, March 30, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) ‰?? Traffic was snarled for hours Tuesday after a semi hauling a tanker trailer on Interstate 84 near Croydon overturned and spilled its cargo of an emulsion substance, sparking a hazmat response.

The westbound tanker left its lane, and went onto the right shoulder, then overturned, according to information shared by Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street.

‰??The semi came to rest upside down,‰?? his statement says. ‰??The tanker was filled with an emulsion substance that was leaking. Both directions of I-84 were shut down.‰??

Did you ever see a phosphogypsum stack, aka a ‰??gypstack‰??? To a first timer, it‰??s a breathtaking sight ‰?? a 400 acre ‰??mountain‰?? rising to the height of a 20-story building. To a resident of mid-central Florida, it‰??s the normal background vista.

If you climb up this 200-foot incline, you can see its contents ‰?? as much as an 80-acre acidic lake with pH levels as low as 1.5. And this lake is likely to be around for a while, since the radioactive radium that makes up the lake has a 1,630-year half-life.

Adding to this soup is a significant presence of sulfur, as well as lesser amounts of arsenic, barium, cadmium and lead. The fertilizer industry in Florida produces about 30 million tons of the stuff each year; the over 900 million tons that have been produced so far fill about 25 such ‰??mountains‰?? in Florida, a state well known for heavy rains and sinkholes.

Exposure to phosphogypsum ‰?? which can leach from gypsum stacks into subsurface aquifers, can be absorbed by plants, consumed by livestock and wildlife and work its way through the food chain to humans ‰?? is known to cause cancer in 1 in ever 10,000 people that come into contact with it.

Two people lost their Oak Harbor home after a mix of household cleaning supplies ignited a chemical fire Sunday night.

Oak Harbor Fire Chief Ray Merrill said firefighters from Oak Harbor Fire Department, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue and the Navy responded at 6:45 p.m. to a mobile home on fire at Parkwood Manor on Northwest Crosby Avenue.

They put out the flames in 30 minutes, but the home was a total loss.

‰??They burn very intensely, and there were a lot of hidden fires that we had to get to because of the construction of the mobile home,‰?? Merrill said.

He said firefighters believe the fire began under the kitchen sink when one of the occupants mixed two kinds of drain cleaner. It set off a chemical reaction that sparked the fire.

RENESAS CFO SAYS FINANCIAL IMPACT OF FIRE LIMITED IN MID-TERM

TOKYO, March 31 (Reuters) - The chief financial officer at Japan's Renesas Electronics Corp 6723.T told a shareholders meeting on Wednesday that while a fire at its chipmaking plant would have immense impact on short-term finances, the medium-term impact will be limited.

That financial impact will not affect plans to buy Dialog Semiconductor PLC DLGS.DE, Shuhei Shinkai said, without elaborating on the short and mid-term time frames involved.

The Japanese chipmaker on Tuesday said it would take at least 100 days for production to normalise at a factory that suffered a major blaze on March 19. Japan's government has since urged Taiwanese peers to help with chip production.

The fire at the Naka plant followed soon after an earthquake stopped production for three days last month. In 2011, the plant shut down for three months after an earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeast coast.

Chief Executive Officer Hidetoshi Shibata said on Wednesday that while the scale of fire damage is less than the earthquake a decade ago, there is a bigger hurdle towards recovery due to chemical pollution caused by the fire.

A workflow for the development of organometallic processes in flow was applied to synthesize 1-(5-bromopyridin-2-yl)-2-methylpropan-2-ol, a pharmaceutical intermediate. Key factors and corresponding practical assessments required for the scale-up when transferring from batch to flow are highlighted. During the rapid process development, unexpected and expected issues concerned with the use of 1 M and 2 M lithium diisopropylamide in flow were encountered and overcome as they arose. Organolithium chemistry was operated in continuous flow mode; a reaction sequence of sp3 deprotonation and in-line acetone quench, followed by a semibatch workup was scaled up to multigram quantities in a rapid, fit-for-purpose manner for early-phase project delivery.

AN EXPLOSION, which occurred at 00:45 local time on 29 March at an Indonesian refinery, has seriously injured at least five people.

The incident erupted at a refinery tank, specifically a T-301 tank, at Pertamina‰??s Balongan refinery in the Indramayu District, West Java. Pertamina is Indonesia‰??s national energy company. Reports note that local residents described a strong smell of fuel in the air around the time of the incident.

The New York Times reports that three storage tanks caught fire and that nearly ten hours later crews were still working to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to a fourth tank. Fire services, along with Pertamina‰??s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) team were deployed to extinguish the blaze, according to Pertamina. The fire has not been reported extinguished but according to Agus Suprijanto, Pertamina‰??s Senior VP for Corporate Communications & Investor Relations, it had been localised to prevent spread to the surrounding area.

Pertamina initially reported that five residents in the area at the time of the explosion suffered burns and were taken to intensive care at a local hospital. It later said that there were six victims that had been referred to another hospital, and that their conditions were being evaluated by a team of doctors. News reports have added that a further 15 people received minor injuries and that authorities were trying to locate three others.

Around 1,000 local residents have been evacuated from the area and roadblocks have been put in place.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVISTS SAY NORLITE PLANT IN COHOES WAS NATIONAL AFFF-BURNING LEADER

New data reveals a third of the U.S. military‰??s stockpile of AFFF was burned at Norlite in Cohoes, in Albany County.

Now being sued by residents, Norlite is facing scrutiny from environmental advocates and local elected officials after it emerged that the plant burned PFAS, believed to be carcinogenic, in 2018 and 2019.

Bennington College‰??s David Bond has released new information about Norlite's role in the government program to burn toxic firefighting foam, gleaned from examining U.S. Department of Defense shipping documents.

"The military, between 2016 and 2020 burned over 20 million pounds of a toxic firefighting foam AFFF, despite there being no evidence that incineration effectively destroys these toxic chemicals. For the very first time, my students and I have collected all available information on those shipments of a AFFF to incinerators and published it last week. And when we've compiled that data, the thing that really jumped out to us was how much of that came to Norlite.‰??
