Yesterday‰??s CHAS technical sessions included many interesting presentations with active discussions between the audience and the speakers. One attendee described the sessions this way:
"#ACSSpring2021
"Tech talks: speaker gives talk, audience members ask questions that speaker answers
‰?|"‰?»**At_Symbol_Here**acsdchas‰?‰?©: speaker gives talk, audience members say "Let me tell you a story‰?|"

"I love this place :)‰??

Anyway, the abstract deadline for the fall national meeting is Monday at midnight and we could use more submissions. Of particular interest is the symposium on Designing & Operating Facilities with Safety in Mind. Everyone who has worked in a lab has felt the impact of their building on their work. We‰??d like to hear your story about this challenge and how it worked out for you. Either as part of the national meeting technical program, or in an upcoming special issue of ACS Chemical Health & Safety.

To submit abstracts for the national meeting, go to
https://callforabstracts.acs.org/acsfall2021
The Division is able to pay for the registration fee for speakers who need that help.

Contact me if you would like more information about topics we‰??re interested in exploring for the ACS CH&S special issue.

Designing & Operating Facilities with Safety in Mind
Christopher Incarvito
Joseph Pickel
This symposium will build upon previous events focused on the increased role of design and managed operations in the research enterprise. The collaborative nature of scientific research teams requires an equally as collaborative planning and operations team. More and more, professionals trained in specific scientific disciplines are seeking positions with broader responsibilities beyond their perceived core competencies å? space design, facilities, laboratory management, purchasing, finance, etc. This session will explore the form-to-function dynamic of laboratory design with an eye towards designing spaces that safeguard researchers by implementing environmental health and safety features early in the design process. Learning Outcomes å? Application of safety-guided space planning å? Examine post-occupancy risk-mitigation strategies å? Discuss and compare specific laboratory design case studies å? new building, renovation, relocation, etc. å? as they relate to safety.

Moving forward: Lessons Learned from Pandemics, Extreme Weather Events, Fire Storms & More (Invited)
Neal Langerman
Flooding, rain, extreme storms, wildland fires, pandemics and more are forcing institutions and facilities to re-examine their operating assumptions and design parameters. Manufacturing facilities, educational institutions, government agencies and businesses are invited to participate in this symposium with a focus on moving forward based on the lessons we have learned from these disasters. How are you revising your thinking about preparing for hurricanes? How are you modifying your operations because of heavy smoke in the air? What will you operations look like as we co-exist with the lingering SARS-CoV2 virus?

Safety Leadership & Diversity Mary Koza
Safety and Diversity are core values of the ACS, this session will be a mix of invited speakers and contributed speakers. They will focus on their beginnings to the present with an emphasis on what programs (eg: ACS SEED program) and life lessons have supported them through their careers. Through this session we would like to share experiences and best practices.
