UPDATE: A worker was severely injured when he was splashed with chemicals at plant in East Rutherford on Thursday, responders said.

The worker suffered injuries that included inhalation burns when he apparently was splashed by hydroflouric acid while hooking a hose to a vat at Diamond Chemical Company on Dubois Street off Union Avenue near Route 17, responders said.

A medical chopper flew him to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

Diamond Chemical, which has a 150,000-square-foot complex on 12 acres, makes cleaning and sanitizing products for various industrial and institutional uses -- including laundry, housekeeping and sanitizing.

It includes what the company describes as a state-of-the art laboratory staffed by a "full complement of highly qualified chemists."

UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE ASKS STATE FOR $35 MILLION TO REBUILD MCKINLY LAB

The University of Delaware is asking the state for $35 million to help rebuild McKinly Lab, which was damaged by a fire in 2017.

‰??Because of the fire, we've been limited in the number of students we can educate in the STEM disciplines,‰?? UD President Dennis Assanis said Thursday. ‰??Our entire state has benefited for many years from the research and education that took place in McKinly, so it is absolutely essential that we replace McKinly with a much more efficient, modern and reimagined interdisciplinary facility.‰??

Assanis‰?? comments came during his annual capital budget request to the state legislature‰??s Joint Finance Committee. All week, the JFC has been hearing capital budget requests from various state agencies, and the committee will later finalize the capital budget and send it to the full legislature for a vote.

Gov. John Carney‰??s budget proposal included $10 million in capital funds for UD, earmarked for deferred maintenance. However, Assanis made the case for a much larger investment in the state‰??s biggest university this year.

‰??Given the urgent needs of the post-pandemic economy in Delaware and the potential for a large infrastructure package coming from the federal government, this may be exactly the right moment to put significant resources into a large project, like McKinly Lab, that will benefit the university, our entire state and everybody for several decades to come,‰?? he said.

A three-alarm fire broke out in McKinly Lab, located on Delaware Avenue, in August 2017. A construction crew was renovating a lab in the basement, and a worker‰??s Sawzall tool ignited material in the ventilation system. The fire then spread through the ductwork. Eighty percent of the building was damaged.

An apartment complex in Ukiah was evacuated Thursday morning as investigators searched for the source of a chemical odor, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority reported.

According to UVFA Chief Doug Hutchinson, crews responded to the Jack Simpson School View Apartment complex at 1051 N. Bush St. around 9 p.m. May 5 when people reported smelling a chemical odor. During the first response, Hutchinson said firefighters were ‰??unable to locate either an odor or a source of the reported odor.‰??

Then Thursday morning, Hutchinson said people working in an attic at the complex reported having symptoms after smelling a chemical odor, and that their symptoms dissipated when they went outside.

The UVFA was dispatched to the complex again around 10 a.m. May 6, and all residents were evacuated from the building while crews again tried to find the source of the smell. Hutchinson said investigators were using chemical-detecting equipment that was alerting to certain areas, and ‰??we‰??re still trying to isolate the source.‰??

LAHORE:Eight rescuers were left injured during a firefighting operation in a chemical factory in Karol Ghatti in Gujarpura on Thursday.

Control Room of Rescue 1122 received a fire call in a chemical godown, ‰??Ahmad Enterprise‰?? at around 9.30am. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. The place of over six marlas had highly inflammable material, thinners and chemicals. Printing work on wrappers of different food and other items was done in the unit. The thinners and chemicals were used for that purpose. In a short span of time, fire spread to almost all sides of the installation and engulfed the whole building.

After sensing the gravity of the situation, all the backup of Lahore Rescue 1122 was called in. At least 12 emergency vehicles and 40 rescuers took part in the operation. While the rescuers were busy in the operation, the building collapsed. As a result, eight rescuers received injuries. One of the injured was a safety officer.

They were shifted to a nearby hospital where doctors said three rescuers had received serious injuries and others minor, said a Rescue 1122 spokesperson. However, the condition of all the rescuers was out of danger. Rescue officials asserted that the building collapsed because it was in a dilapidated condition. Rescue spokesperson quoting the eye-witnesses accounts said that the fire erupted because of sparking in a nearby transformer.

On the other hand, the owner of the building disagreed with the proposition. He commented that lantern of the building fell down because it was damaged due to the heat of the fire in the chemical material.

Three years ago, an explosion rocked Wisconsin's only oil refinery in Superior, injuring three dozen people and causing a temporary evacuation of city residents. But investigators with the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board have yet to release a final report on their investigation into the blast.

The Duluth News Tribune first reported that former employees and government auditors found that the agency has faced a shortage of staffing and unfilled board positions that have contributed to a backlog of investigations.

The Chemical Safety Board‰??s website currently shows 20 active investigations. They include reviews of the April 2018 explosion at the Husky refinery in Superior and the May 2017 explosion at the Didion Milling Co., in Cambria. The two events are among the four oldest incidents currently under investigation.

BEIRUT ‰?? A German company has removed dangerous chemicals stored in dozens of containers from Beirut's port and is shipping them abroad as part of efforts to secure the facility following last year's massive blast, the office of Lebanon's prime minister said Wednesday.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab's office said 59 containers of "hazardous material were deported" from Beirut's port on Wednesday.

Germany's ambassador to Lebanon, Andreas Kindl, tweeted in February that the material has first been treated at the port, and that it is ready to be shipped to Germany. On Wednesday, he said the ship carrying the material has left and will arrive in the German town of Wilhelmshaven in about 10 days.

"It will take weeks to destroy the chemicals that have been in the Port of Beirut for decades," Kindl tweeted.

The decision to remove the material followed the Aug. 4 blast at Beirut's port that was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.

Nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate ‰?? a highly explosive material used in fertilizers ‰?? had been improperly stored in the port for years. The catastrophic blast killed 211 people and injured more than 6,000, devastating nearby neighborhoods.

In November, Lebanon signed a deal with Germany's Combi Lift to treat and ship abroad the containers consisting of flammable chemicals. The deal is worth $3.6 million, toward which port authorities in Lebanon paid $2 million while the German government is covering the rest.

TUESDAY, May 4, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Volunteer firefighters have higher levels of so-called "forever chemicals" in their bodies than the general population does, a new study finds.

It also found that levels of these potentially toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in volunteer firefighters' bodies rise with years of service.

PFAS are found in everyday items like electronics and carpeting, and they have been linked with heart disease and other health conditions that strike firefighters.

In this study, researchers from Rutgers University in New Jersey examined levels of nine PFAS chemicals in the blood of 135 members of an N.J. volunteer fire department, and compared them to the general public.

Levels of two PFAS -- perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) -- were higher in the volunteer firefighters.

"Notably, we found PFDoA levels in 80% of the firefighters, but little in the general public," said study author Judith Graber, an associate professor at Rutgers School of Public Health.

Marathon Petroleum Corp's (MPC.N) 585,000 barrel-per-day Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, Texas, on Tuesday issued a shelter-in-place notice because of a toxic leak, said people familiar with plant operations.

Marathon and Texas City officials ordered workers and nearby residents to go indoors and close windows for over an hour due to a leak of hydrofluoric acid (HF), said the people, who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity. Hydrofluoric acid forms a ground-hugging cloud at room temperature that can lead to severe health problems and even death.

Two workers were taken to a nearby medical facility as a precaution due to a chemical leak at the plant, said Marathon spokesman Jamal Kheiry. He did not disclose the chemical involved.

"The Galveston Bay Refinery's automated response systems today activated mitigation measures in response to a small chemical release," Kheiry said in a statement. "The release has been stopped and air monitoring data indicate no off-site impact."

The House unanimously approved a bill Tuesday banning toxic chemicals from a slate of consumer products in Vermont.

The legislation, S.20, would restrict PFAS chemicals ‰?? perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl ‰?? in four main areas: fire-extinguishing foam, food packaging, rugs and carpets, and ski wax. It also includes restrictions of phthalates and bisphenols, which are commonly used in plastic products.

Rep. Dane Whitman, D-Bennington, said the House Committee on Human Services took weeks of testimony on the bill, learning that the toxic PFAS chemicals ‰??can cause great harm and lasting costs to human health and property.‰??
