WEST GOSHEN TOWNSHIP, PA ‰?? Chester County Department of Emergency Services reported today that an incident at the Boot Road pumping station in West Goshen Township was a small release of hydrocarbons inside the pump station facility.

On Monday night the Energy Transfer control room called 9-1-1 to report they were receiving a vapor detector alarm at the Boot Road pumping station, 1261 Boot Road, in West Goshen Township, according to Patty Mains, Assistant Director for External Liaison and Public Information for the Chester County Department of Emergency Services.

Mains reported that Energy Transfer Partners stated the alarm they received indicated a small leak of hydrocarbons inside the pump station facility with no hydrocarbons detected on the outside of the pump station building. Energy Transfer requested to 9-1-1 that emergency responders be dispatched out of an abundance of caution, Emergency Services said.

Lisa Coleman of Energy Transfer explained "Pump stations are strategically located along a pipeline to maintain the flow of hydrocarbons through the line. The Mariner East pipelines connect into the pump station, but are also able to bypass the station in order to remain operational if maintenance is being done on the station."

A hazmat team responded to a crash involving a semi truck near Edwin C. Moses Boulevard and Germantown Pike Tuesday just before 4 p.m.

The crash resulted in the semi truck‰??s fuel tank rupturing and spilling diesel fuel.

Dispatch says that the driver of the semi estimated there was around 100 gallons of diesel fuel in the leaking vehicle.

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - It wasn‰??t a deadly chemical that prompted a hazmat situation in California Monday but spilled liquid fabric softener.

California Highway Patrol said an Amazon driver was traveling on Highway 101 around noon when he smelled a strong chemical odor coming from the back of his truck. He exited the highway and called 911 not knowing what the substance was, according to local authorities.

Several agencies arrived on the scene including Ventura CHP, Ventura County Fire Engines and Ventura County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit.

Authorities said the hazmat team recognized the substance as a liquid fabric softener, not identifying the brand. Patrol officers poked fun at the incident, posting, "The truck was deemed safe, extra soft, wrinkle free, and continued on to make its deliveries."

NEW PLAN TO CLEAN UP HAZARDOUS MATERIAL FROM PARK POINT BEACH

DULUTH, MN -- The City of Duluth is asking people to stay away from a portion of Park Point beach.

That's because the effort to address Park Point's beach erosion created another problem.

After people discovered pieces of shredded aluminum on the beach last year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers now has a plan to clean it up.

The hazardous materials ended up there last fall when the Army Corps placed dredged material on the beach to help with erosion issues.

The ground-penetrating radar revealed nails and aluminum fragments on the beach between 7th and 10th street.

The Army Corps accepted responsibility.

"We have worked with the city to place barrels out of a cautionary measure to identify those areas," USACE Chief of Construction and Survey Corey Weston said. "So we would ask that people stay clear of those barrels."

PNNL INVENTION REDUCES RISK OF BATTERY STORAGE EXPLOSIONS

RICHLAND, Wash. ‰?? As more companies turn to large scale, battery storage projects for backup power sources, experts at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, PNNL, wanted to make sure these facilities don‰??t risk exploding.

Unfortunately, there have already been dangerous fires and explosions at battery storage facilities in Arizona and across the world in Great Britain.

These facilities contain rows of lithium-ion batteries that can store energy from a solar or other source of collection, for backup for local municipalities.

Matthew Paiss a technical advisor with PNNL, used to be a firefighter and wanted to be able to protect those who respond to battery storage fires.

‰??We thought, ‰??what‰??s the simplest way to prevent an explosion?‰?? and that‰??s, open the doors up,‰?? he said.

A team at PNNL, including Paiss, came up with IntelliVent. It‰??s a system of sensors that can detect when the batteries are overheating, and open up vents to minimize the risk of explosion.

Abu Dhabi ‰?? The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport announced the launch of an online system that monitors vehicles transporting hazardous materials, in aim of reinforcing road safety and security through constant surveillance and control over these vehicles.

This announcement is in line with the efforts dedicated to meet the requirements of the Integrated Hazardous Material Management System and Abu Dhabi‰??s governance system. Additionally, it is part of projects and programs implemented within the strategic plan to manage hazardous materials in the Emirate. This is realized through a collaboration with a team presided by the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi, and includes 28 entities representing all local entities and some federal authorities. They all work together to achieve the highest levels of security to provide a safe and sustainable environment for everyone.

ITC stated that the new online system allows the identification of the transported materials in which enhances monitoring hazardous materials and wastes transport and ensure quick reposnding to emergencies. The system supports the efforts aiming at providing the best methods to protect society and the environment, in accordance with the procedures and requirements stipulated by the Abu Dhabi Integrated Hazardous Material Management System. The purpose of which is ensuring the commitment of facilities that are in charge of handling, producing, storing, transporting, and using said materials, while adhering to environmental procedures, requirements, and stipulations which provide the appropriate level of protection to society, road users, and environment.

ROCKVUE APARTMENTS EVACUATED AFTER RESIDENTS REPORT CHEMICAL SMELL

Residents of Rockvue Apartments reported ‰??irritating chemicals‰?? in the air late Monday afternoon, prompting the Billings Fire Department to evacuate tenants.

Concerned residents had called to complain of an ‰??irritating sensation‰?? in their throats and noses, said fire department Battalion Chief Jason Lyon. The fire department deployed numerous ambulances and fire response vehicles to the scene.

Reports from residents indicated that the sensation grew in intensity on higher floors of the building. While many residents from the fourth floor and above have been asked to evacuate, some on lower floors have been asked to shelter in place.

The residents who called the situation in to the Billings Police Department described the sensation as a ‰??burning in the throat,‰?? and said that the pain was severe enough to ‰??make you catch your breath.‰??

Ronald Dodson, a displaced resident, began experiencing symptoms while returning to his home via elevator. On the way to his sixth floor apartment, both he and another tenant in the elevator with him began coughing and experiencing severe irritation. ‰??She started coughing the second she stepped on the elevator,‰?? said Dodson. ‰??It was a very severe reaction.‰??

A hazmat team deployed into the building "did not detect any of the substances which they usually test for," indicating that the irritation, while unpleasant, was not likely to be dangerous, Lyon said. The hazmat team was unable to determine the exact source of the fumes.

A violent explosion accident occurred when diaminomethanesulfonic acid was synthesized from diaminomethanesulfinic acid and hydrogen peroxide. In this work, we reviewed all the reported methods of synthesizing diaminomethanesulfonic acid and analyzed the causes of the explosion in detail from the reaction mechanisms and operations. In the end, strategies were proposed to avoid underlying explosion incidents in relevant experiments.
