Interesting.  It will not work on consumer product SDSs, but it might on single chemical products from reliable sources.

I'll make you a deal.  When you get that sucker up and running, you can send me a few of the SDSs and the computer's interpretation of them.  I'd like to take a crack at trying to find information that was missed.

Since it is a free offer, the price is right.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Teaching computers to read

Dear Colleagues,
We are working on a proof of concept project where we have a computer recognize and read safety data sheets, to extract data.  If you have any scans of paper versions of SDS you are willing to share I would be grateful for your sending them my way.  We have trained the computer with brand new pdfs and would like to challenge it with real-world scanned versions...

If you have one or a few, please email them to me at rnvernon**At_Symbol_Here**ucdavis.edu

If you have a LOT, please contact me and we'll figure out a mutually agreeable virtual drive to use.

I do appreciate your sending scans of paper versions of SDS to us to see if we can get the computer to read them...

Thanks,
-Russ
