Muscat: Medical professionals in Oman have advised parents to make sure their children do not put hand sanitiser lotions into their eyes, either accidentally or on purpose, because the harm it causes them might be irreversible.
With sanitiser bottles a relatively new concept in many homes, having only been bought in large numbers since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, small children might not be fully aware as to what happens if they mishandle the contents within.
If they enter the eye, says Dr Sudha Ramesh, an ophthalmologist at NMC Healthcare, they could damage the surface of the eye, cause burning, or even affect a person‰??s vision by forming a cloudy layer over the cornea of the eye.
‰??The chemicals in hand sanitisers make them mildly toxic to the eye, and the main effect of this is severe burning and redness,‰?? she said.

Another body has been found close to where an explosion occurred at a chemical waste incineration plant in the western German city of Leverkusen one week after the accident.
The victim has been identified, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor‰??s office in Cologne said on Wednesday morning.
At least six people were killed by the powerful explosion and, according to the Cologne police, one person is still missing.
Cologne police are continuing to search the large Chempark site in Leverkusen.
The public prosecutor‰??s office is investigating unknown persons on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent causing of an explosion.
The plant‰??s operator, Currenta, has said that the clean-up and recovery work is likely to take some time.

BOSTON (WHDH) - Fire crews were called to a nursing home in Hyde Park Tuesday for reports of a chemical incident.
SKY7 HD flew over Dana Avenue earlier in the evening where police say a pool chemical caused toxic fumes inside the house.
The chemicals were removed and the house was ventilated. No one was hurt.

FAIRFIELD, CT ‰?? A hazmat team was called Monday to a medical facility in Southport.
Firefighters responded about 5:30 p.m. to a complaint of a strange odor at RegalCare at Southport in the 900 block of Mill Hill Terrace, according to Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood.
Emergency personnel determined the smell was due to a hazardous material and contacted the regional hazmat team, as well as state and local health officials, Sherwood said. Firefighters also monitored the patient areas at the rehabilitation facility and confirmed the air ratings were normal.
The hazardous material, which was removed Monday evening, was identified as a hydrocarbon-based fuel oil additive that was dumped into a sewage ejection system in the basement in error, creating the smell, according to Sherwood.

BHARUCH: A worker was killed and two others were injured in an explosion inside a chemical manufacturing unit in the Dahej industrial area of Gujarat's Bharuch district on Monday evening, police officials said.
The blast, which was followed by a fire, occurred in the premises of SRF Ltd's chemical manufacturing unit in Dahej, they said.
Though the explosion was followed by a fire, it was brought under control in time, said Bharuch District Superintendent of Police, Rajendrasinh Chudasama.
"The blast occurred in a chemical tank in the premises of SRF company.
One person working near the tank was killed, while two others received burn injuries and shifted to a hospital for treatment.
The fire was quickly brought under control" said Chudasama.

SAN DIEGO ‰?? A nationwide chlorine shortage is putting a damper on those pool parties and swim lessons San Diego County residents pined for during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The scarcity of the chemical has closed some public pools and forced others to reduce operations. Most recently, Coronado shuttered its pools until further notice, saying it has received little to no supply to keep both its competition and recreational pools open at the Aquatics Center.
‰??There is a nationwide chlorine shortage and it‰??s kind of been ongoing, but it‰??s really hitting home,‰?? said Roger Miller, director of Coronado‰??s Recreation and Golf Services.
The city uses about 500 to 600 gallons of chlorine a week to treat an estimated 100,000 gallons of water to keep its pools operational. Last week, Coronado received a shipment of only 300 gallons, Miller said.

MANSFIELD ‰?? Police and fire officials responding to a medical emergency early Monday morning discovered an alleged drug lab at a downtown apartment building.
The call came just after 1:20 a.m. at 17 Fulton Place, forcing evacuation of the building.
A 40-year-old man who lives in the apartment where the alleged lab was found was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro due to what police called erratic and irrational behavior.

The building was declared safe about 6 a.m. and residents were allowed back into their apartments.
The state Fire Marshal‰??s Clandestine Drug Laboratory Response team and Hazardous Materials unit responded and assisted detectives. Police and fire officials cleared the scene about 8 a.m.

Los Alamos National Laboratory has identified 45 barrels of radioactive waste so potentially explosive ‰?? due to being mixed with incompatible chemicals ‰?? that crews have been told not to move them and instead block off the area around the containers, according to a government watchdog‰??s report.
Crews have worked to ferret out drums containing volatile compounds and move them to a more secure domed area of the lab after the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board issued a scathing report last year saying there were possibly hundreds of barrels of unstable nuclear waste.
The safety board estimated an exploding waste canister could expose workers to 760 rem, far beyond the threshold of a lethal dose. A rem is a unit used to measure radiation exposure. In its latest weekly report, the safety board said crews at Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos, also known as N3B ‰?? the contractor in charge of cleaning up the lab‰??s legacy waste ‰?? have pegged 60 barrels with volatile mixtures and have relocated 15 drums to the domed area.
Forty-five barrels are deemed too dangerous to move, raising questions of what ultimately can be done with them and how hazardous it would be to keep them in their current spot.
‰??The current restrictions are that the containers shall not be moved,‰?? the report said. ‰??There is a marked buffer zone established around each container of potential concern, and intrusive operations are prohibited within the buffer zone.‰??
Officials at the U.S. Department of Energy‰??s environmental management office said they couldn‰??t comment on the report or on how the lab stores waste, citing lack of time to answer questions.
Volatile waste mixtures have received more attention since 2014 when a waste container from the Los Alamos lab packaged with a blend of organic cat litter and nitrate salts burst in an underground chamber of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad. The radioactive release contaminated the storage site so extensively it shut down for three years and cost $2 billion to clean up.
