Hello James;
In that case in industry we break it down by activities:
1. Setup
a. weighting out the substrate
b. weighting out the catalyst (this is typically one of the most riskiest activities (especially associated with palladium or platinum on carbon) also remember anything that touches the catalyst has a fire risk associated with
it.
c. charging the catalyst into reactor (need to ensure that reactor is empty and purged with nitrogen)
d. charging solvent and substrate (again ensure that reactor is purged with nitrogen)
2. Reaction
a. pressurization of reactor (ensuring that the reactor is not over pressurized)
b. if there is a additional charge of catalyst (charge of catalyst is very dangerous and due to the presence of active catalyst and solvent and hydrogen)
c. sampling (reaction mixture is flammable and potential pyrophoric)
d. depressurization (venting of hydrogen, hazards associated with venting hydrogen)
3. Workup
a. Filtering the catalyst off (extremely hazardous due to the solvent and active catalyst)
b. deposing of the spent catalyst, another extremely hazardous task and one that is not an area of focus.
We can discuss further if you need more detail
Thanks
Jack

Hello James;
There are several groups that might be interesting for you to talk to. However, are you interested in only lab scale hydrogenations or larger scales? And as far as methanol filtrations or is this focused on filtration after the hydrogenation is completed?
Thanks

A colleague asked me to gather your thoughts about the following inquiry.

Do you know, or do you know of someone/group I could talk to concerning industry best practices about hydrogenation/open access hydrogenation/methanol/filtration, etc.? We would like to see if there are some practices out there that we haven't considered.

Regards ... Jim
