FIRE AT LEAMINGTON SPA PLASTICS FACILITY

A FIRE and subsequent explosions occurred at a plastics facility in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK on 27 August. One worker is still unaccounted for.

The fire started at around 10:30 local time at Leeson Polyurethanes facility in Tachbrook Park in Leamington Spa. The business park is surrounded by residential areas. Several explosions occurred as a result of the fire. No injuries were reported but one employee remains missing.

Local residents reported on social media groups that there was a strong chemical smell in the area and that some people were vomiting in the streets. A huge plume of black plume could be seen from at least 20 km away. A video from The Guardian shows the extent of the fire.

ZEELAND, Mich. (WOOD) ‰?? Crews painstakingly worked to clean up the release of a plastic powder outside a plant in Zeeland Tuesday.

The spill at the plant on Centennial Street north of E. Washington Avenue was reported shortly after 9 a.m. Ottawa County Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt told News 8 said the pulverized copolymer ‰?? essentially a fine plastic ‰?? was released when a valve blew and dispersed west and north of the plant.

Crews will need to vacuum the plastic up, a laborious process stretching into the evening.

‰??There‰??s multiple companies that are coming in, some local, even some out of the area. They will be coming in to take all of that chemical away,‰?? Hunt said.

There was not any immediate threat to the public. People may notice a fine white powder on their car or property but a small amount is not dangerous.

‰??If there‰??s any risk, it would be to stir it up significantly and to breathe it in. All of it right now is on the ground, on roofs, on tops of cars,‰?? Hunt said.

PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) -- Residents in Pasadena were under a brief shelter-in-place order as authorities responded to a chemical release at a warehouse. Now, the cause is under investigation.

According to an alert issued by Community Awareness Emergency Response, or CAER, the leak happened shortly after noon on Tuesday at the IDC Warehouse on Bay Park Road, just south of Fairmont Parkway.

People who live near the area were asked to stay at home as a precautionary measure.

According to the company's website, the facility offers various warehouse services, including chemical storage.

The type of chemical that was leaked wasn't immediately disclosed.

The latest chemical incident in east Harris County comes a month after two workers were killed and dozens were injured in a deadly chemical release at the LyondellBasell plant in La Porte.

Material extrusion-type fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3-D printing is a valuable tool for education. During FFF 3-D printing, thermal degradation of the polymer releases small particles and chemicals, many of which are hazardous to human health. In this study, particle and chemical emissions from 10 different filaments made from virgin (never printed) and recycled polymers were used to print the same object at the polymer manufacturer‰??s recommended nozzle temperature (‰??normal‰??) and at a temperature higher than recommended (‰??hot‰??) to simulate the real-world scenarios of a person intentionally or unknowingly printing on a machine with a changed setting. Emissions were evaluated in a college teaching laboratory using standard sampling and analytical methods. From mobility sizer measurements, particle number-based emission rates were 81 times higher; the proportion of ultrafine particles (diameter <100 nm) were 4% higher, and median particle sizes were a factor o!
f 2 smaller for hot-temperature prints compared with normal-temperature prints (all p-values <0.05). There was no difference in emission characteristics between recycled and virgin acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and polylactic acid polymer filaments. Reducing contaminant release from FFF 3-D printers in educational settings can be achieved using the hierarchy of controls: (1) elimination/substitution (e.g., training students on principles of prevention-through-design, limiting the use of higher emitting polymer when possible); (2) engineering controls (e.g., using local exhaust ventilation to directly remove contaminants at the printer or isolating the printer from students); (3) administrative controls such as password protecting printer settings and establishing and enforcing adherence to a standard operating procedure based on a proper risk assessment for the setup and use (e.g., limiting the use of temperatures higher than those specified for the filaments used); an!

In the synthesis process of N-nitrodihydroxyethyl dinitrate (DINA) with the HNO3‰??Mg(NO3)2 method, the thermal stability of the nitration reaction liquid of the final state is poor, which leads to the thermal runaway of the entire reaction system easily. The research on the thermal runaway reaction under actual reaction conditions indicates high consumption and high risk. In this article, thermal decomposition behavior and isothermal thermal decomposition kinetics of the nitration reaction liquid of the final state in the synthesis process of DINA were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and microcalorimetry. The mechanism of the stability of the nitration reaction liquid was explored. The thermal safety of the material in a large-scale reactor was simulated and predicted by a thermal simulation software on the basis of kinetic parameters including activation energy, pre-exponential factors, and mechanistic functions. These findings not only avoid the ri!
sk and consumption of large-size materials but also guide their application in process optimization, inherent safety design, and handling.

Toxic PFAS compounds are contaminating the air inside homes, classrooms and stores at alarming levels, a new study has found.

Researchers with the University of Rhode Island and Green Science Policy Institute tested indoor air at 20 sites and detected the ‰??forever chemicals‰?? in 17 locations. The airborne compounds are thought to break off of PFAS-treated products such as carpeting and clothing and attach to dust or freely float through the indoor environment.

The study, published on Tuesday in Environmental Science & Technology, used a new PFAS measurement technique for checking air. It found particularly high levels in several kindergarten classrooms and also checked the supply room of an outdoor clothing store, offices, several university classrooms, university labs and an elevator.

A 2017 study found a correlation between high levels of PFAS in the air and in human blood serum, and the new study used modeling that found that kindergarteners were probably exposed to more PFAS by breathing them in than by ingesting the compounds.

HAZMAT INCIDENT: LEAKING HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS BRING RESPONDERS TO DUMONT HOME

Leaking household cleaners created enough of a problem to bring responders to a Dumont home, authorities said.

Borough police, firefighters and the Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the Prospect Avenue home along with a Bergen County Hazardous Materials Unit late Sunday morning, Mayor Andrew LaBruno said.

No one was hospitalized, LaBruno said.

"We are extremely pleased no parties were injured or made ill due to the incident," the mayor said. "A huge 'thank you' to our Dumont first responders for their tremendous work on the scene and the Bergen County HAZMAT team for their assistance."

The street was closed between Locust and Columbia avenues for the duration of the incident.

The Waco Fire Department is on the scene of a natural gas leak, crews are responding to assist Atmos Energy.

Waco fire units and a hazmat team are currently at South 24th Street and Dutton Ave. responding to the situation. The fire department has been on the scene since about 8:50 p.m., machines are stationed and are monitoring as crews work to determine where the leak is coming from.

According to the fire department, responders are investigating two lines, greater than 2 inches, and are not sure which line is the cause of the leak at this time.

Cloths soaked with household chemicals may have ignited a brief fire Sunday night at an outbuilding near a north Napa home, according to firefighters.

The fire was reported at 10:50 p.m. in the 1800 block of El Centro Avenue and erupted from trash cans placed next to a shed on the property, according to Matt Colburn, Napa Fire spokesperson. The flames were contained within 45 minutes, and no damage was reported to the home itself.

While the cause remained under investigation Monday, Colburn said the possible cause was ignition from rags used to apply or soak up chemicals that can become flammable upon drying. Such products include liquids used to stain or polish wooden furniture and decks, including preparations of linseed oil that generates heat as it dries.
