BUSINESSES that illegally dumped "hazardous materials" onto bonfires in Bradford are likely get a knock at their doors after being caught on a new network of CCTV cameras.

Councillors were told that an effort to catch fly tippers during the Bonfire period led to cameras capturing a number of "horrendous" images of people throwing waste onto fires, leading to "toxic fumes."

Officers are currently scouring through these images, and the fly tippers could expect either a hefty fine or to be taken to court.

The Bradford South Area Committee were given an update on work done by Neighbourhood Wardens and Environmental Enforcement Officers in the constituency at a meeting on Thursday evening.

Officers said fly tipping was one of the most common complaints they received.

CARSON, Calif. -- A stench that emanated from a flood-control channel in Carson and triggered thousands of complaints resulted from chemicals that flowed from a storage yard during a fire and caused vegetation to decay, air regulators said Friday.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District said in a statement it issued notices of violation to four companies and Los Angeles County, which is responsible for maintaining Dominguez Channel.

The notices allege the emissions of hydrogen sulfide caused a public nuisance.

The fire began Sept. 30 at a warehouse property in Carson where two companies stored large amounts of wellness and beauty products, and chemicals including ethanol subsequently flowed into the channel, the district said.

A hazardous spill from a truck transporting aluminum sulfate that started in North Adams and ended in Pownal, Vt. shut down part of Route 7 near the Stewart's Shops convenience store just north of the Williamstown border early Saturday morning.

The road has since been reopened.

According to Williamstown Interim Police Chief Michael Ziemba, a truck transporting the chemical from Holland Company in Adams experienced a broken pipe that began leaking the material in North Adams.

Ziemba said hazmat crews treated the spill areas and swept up the materials in the roadway, and that the process has been completed, as of 11:30 a.m.

He noted that aluminum sulfate is only harmful to humans if ingested.

According to information provided by Amalio Jusino, chairman of the Northern Berkshire Emergency Planning Committee, the leak resulted in a two-foot wide path of substance remaining on the roadway beginning at the Hadley Overpass near North Adams City Hall and continuing onto Route 7 and into Vermont. After the Massachusetts Tier 1 Hazardous Material Team conducted testing and in agreement with Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, Public Works agencies in Williamstown and North Adams are currently covering the substance with a neutralizing agent, which will then be swept up and disposed of properly.

LANSING, Mich. ‰?? The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a plan to mitigate the impact of cancer-causing chemicals at the Adams Plating Site in Lansing Township.

‰??It was a former plating facility and in 2010 there was a fire there,‰?? said Jessie Ferris, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy project manager for the site.

Now, only thing left of the Adam‰??s plating site on North Rosemary Street is vacant land, no trespassing signs and a fence.

The property has been on the federal government's priority list for hazardous waste cleanup since 1989. After the fire, the Environmental Protection Agency removed hazardous substances stored at the site along with contaminated soil.

‰??So EPA started an investigation, which led us to where we are today,‰?? Ferris said.

That investigation led to the proposal, a plan to mitigate vapor intrusion at the site. Experts said vapor intrusion typically occurs when chemical vapors migrate from contaminated ground water through the soil into the basements of foundations of buildings.

SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) ‰?? Virginia State Police say a 63-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash involving a propane truck in Isle of Wight County Friday.

According to police, the propane truck overturned in the 14000 block of Tylers Beach Road, killing the driver. The crash caused a hazmat spill, which closed the road in both directions.

The preliminary investigation by state police indicated the 2005 International 4400 truck (Southern States Propane) was traveling on Tylers Beach Road when the driver lost control of the truck.

The truck ran off the roadway, the driver then overcorrected and struck a tree, causing the truck to overturn.

HAZMAT SITUATION PROMPTS CLEANUP IN GREEN OAK TOWNSHIP

A hazmat situation occurred outside of the Green Oak Township Fire Department on Friday afternoon and subsequent clean-up efforts forced a road closure.

Fire Chief Kevin Gentry says a person walked into the front door of Fire Station 81 and stated that a large drum had just fallen out of a semi-truck at Whitmore Lake Road and Silver Lake Road. He told WHMI Department personnel investigated and discovered a drum of hydrobromic acid that had cracked when it hit the ground and was releasing the acid into the air and onto the ground.

Gentry said hydrobromic acid is an extremely corrosive substance that is dangerous if it comes into skin contact but is also an inhalation hazard ‰?? meaning if inhaled it can damage the lungs - so it is a fairly hazardous substance that needed to be dealt with.

The Fire Department and the Livingston County Hazmat Team secured the drum for removal by an environmental clean-up company. Gentry said investigation revealed that the drum had not been secured properly by the semi that was transporting it, which was located further down Whitmore Lake Road. He said apparently the barrel had not been secured in the back of the truck and bounced against the back door, which somehow came open and caused the drum to fall to the ground. Gentry said that matter is under investigation by the Green Oak Township Police Department.

EL CAJON, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) uncovered an active hexane hash oil extraction laboratory.

San Diego Sheriff‰??s Department Marijuana Enforcement Team members said it began Friday when they carried out a state search warrant. They arrived at a warehouse to find a "sophisticated" operation.

El Cajon Fire Department firefighters helped with the investigation while San Diego deputies and DEA personnel attempted to take apart the laboratory.

San Diego County Hazmat and San Diego Fire Department Hazmat also responded to assist with the clean-up.

PUTIN SLAMS MANAGERS AFTER MINE EXPLOSION

Vladimir Putin has accused the management of the Listvyazhnaya mine of falsifying methane data following the chemical gas explosion that killed 52 people in November 2021.

In a televised meeting on 2 December 2021, cited by Reuters, the Russian president said the management of the mine had "systemically taken measures to hide the facts of excessive methane gas levels in the mine."

Mikhail Fedyaev, an executive at SDS-Ugol, the company that owns the mine, reportedly said during the televised meeting that "it is impossible to bring people back" from the site of the mine explosion and that he is "ready to bear any responsibility."

Three other mine managers have been arrested and charged with negligence related to the explosion.

Putin said authorities would examine two similar mine explosions in the Kemerovo Oblast region, in 2010, which killed 91 people, and 2007, which killed 110.

RISK ASSESSMENT OF THE LEACHABLES‰?? PROFILE FOR SMALL-MOLECULE PHARMACEUTICAL DRUG SUBSTANCES

Tags: us_IL, industrial, discovery, environmental, pharmaceutical

Appropriate control of impurities from all sources is critically important during the development of a pharmaceutical product. One class of impurity that has gained considerable attention over the past few years is extractables and leachables. We report a model for assessment of the risk posed by leachable impurities for a small-molecule drug substance. The first step of this study consists of a high-level assessment of the risk posed by leachable impurities in the drug substance, by taking into account the drug product‰??s route of administration. In the case of parenteral route of administration, a more comprehensive process-specific second step risk assessment is typically warranted. This second step consists of risk assessment of polymer component(s) for the potential to release leachable impurities, risk scoring, and classification. For high-risk components, risk mitigation studies can be performed in step 3, such as leachable impurity removal via component pre-flush wi!
th the process solvent, extractables‰?? studies under harsher conditions, and toxicity assessments.

EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso firefighters initiated a triage and hazmat response after a plane made an emergency landing Thursday evening at El Paso International Airport with numerous passengers reported to be nauseous after being overcome by unknown fumes.

The Frontier Airlines flight, containing over 200 passengers, landed about 7:30 p.m. and went to gate B-10. An ABC-7 crew at the scene observed several passengers taken off the plane by stretchers and loaded into ambulances; in all, six people were being treated for possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

The flight originated in Las Vegas and was headed to San Antonio after being delayed 30 minutes for a leaky fuel line to be fixed, according to passengers. Those passengers told ABC-7 that they smelled strong chemical fumes midway through the flight, which prompted the emergency landing in El Paso.

"When they opened the window of the plane, there was just, you could see all the ambulances -- yeah, dozens of ambulances, fire department and everything. Scared us to death. And then they told us, this is a quote, 'if anyone else feels nauseous, sick to your stomach, please come to the front of the plane. Everyone else remain seated,'" passenger Dee Hart told ABC-7.
