Subject: Re: Level of Fume Hood Use at Academic Institutions
Comments: To: Mary Dougherty

I am not in associated with University or College but our Petrochemical
Complex has a huge organic Laboratory and we use simple formula for DUCTS /
hoods and that is, we maintain 12 cycles of volume per hour in the hoods it
means that we calculate the volume of the hood and then install a induced
draft fan on the hood that gives us twelve times the volume flow rate per
hour from the hood exhaust.

I hope it helps

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Level of Fume Hood Use at Academic Institutions

Stanford University EH&S's Department is seeking information regarding the
level of fume hood use at other academic institutions in undergraduate
organic Chemistry teaching laboratories. We'd appreciate your feedback on
the following:

1) Name of your University or College

2) Do you run microscale organic chemistry labs or macroscale organic
chemistry labs?

3) What is the percentage of organic chemistry experiments conducted in a
fume hood vs on the benchtop? (e.g., We run 100% of our organic
experiments in the fume hood; or, We run microscale organic experiments
primarily on the benchtop - chemicals are dispensed in the hoods).

4) Student-to-fumehood ratio & length of hood (e.g., 2 students per 5 foot
hood ; Or, 5 students rotate using 6 foot hoods).

5) If applicable, does lack of fume hoods impact your curriculum? If so,
how? (e.g., Reduce the labs sections offered per quarter; Or, Use of
substandard aqueous procedures, or shortened procedures allowing rotating
use of hoods.)
