Demystify: 

As a pilot myself, this has been an interesting topic to follow over the years. While "general aviation" can refer to anything from small powered parachutes, to the 4-seat Cessna 172 that I fly, to Learjets, Gulfstreams, and Cessna Citations that business executives and celebrities fly in, the leaded fuel problem is specific to piston engines (i.e. non-turbine/jet/jet fueled) that would have propellers. Many of those small planes have high-compression 4-cycle engines that require octane ratings of 100. The piston-engine general aviation fleet is more of less certified to only burn what is know as 100LL, or 100-octane low-lead. The amount of 100LL consumed worldwide is incredibly small, but the engineering, distribution, and manufacturing hurdles to replacing 100LL, which has been described as a "boutique" fuel, are enormous. In fact, there is only manufacturer of tetraethyl lead in the world. I've heard it said that the fuel producers could produce the entire world's annual supply of 100LL in 1 day. But, it is finally time to remove the last use of leaded fuels.

Apparently, general jet and propellor planes use Jet A fuel (similar to kerosene) which does not contain leads. But the private planes have a variety of engines many of them use avgas which contain a lead additive.
