Demystify:
Hi, Panos

I consulted a sales representative of a fume hood manufacturer and asked for the user’s manual for one of their product lines, which was provided to me. The fume hood manual’s suggested weekly routine maintenance could be made part of an SOP:

• Using ordinary dish soap to clean the surface inside of the fume hood, and the work surface.

• Using an appropriate glass cleaner, clean the sash and all glass surfaces.

As suggested by others, a complete SOP should consider the the materials used within the fume hood.   If the fume hood has a trough or liquid catch, check those as well, especially in older units. I had once found drops of mercury there.  Cleaning would also be a good opportunity to check the baffles for blockages; in the past, I had pulled out Kimwipes, errant pipette tips, accumulated dust, etc., that had been caught behind the baffles.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ed

Hello CHAS,

I had one of my researchers ask what the best process is for cleaning a fume hood and while I have experience doing it, I’m hoping the DCHAS community can help. Do you have any resources for a comprehensive SOP for fume hood cleaning? Also, I remember having a third party company come and clean the fume hoods and they used a spray foam but I don’t remember what the product was so if anyone has any suggestions that way as well, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
