Demystify:
You need to set the pressure correctly. My faculty has used versions of these since 1983 with great effectiveness. You push the handle and you get a normal eyewash hand fee. You pull it out and get a hose in effect. Each manufacture has specifications as to the minimum and maximum water pressure. Set them correctly and the units work the same as standard eyewashes.  We standardized on these decades ago and they have been very successful both as eyewashes and as alternatives to safety showers for smaller incidents.

When the drench hose is hand held it is ONLY a supplement for and not a replacement for a hands free safety shower.

With respect to engaging the clip and using this unit for eye wash duty, the are several concerns.

Showers should deliver 20 gal per min.  Eye wash is in the 0.4 gal per min.  Where are you going to put your face?

I've latched the clip and backed away with a large bucket.  The water went about 8 feet.  want that force in your eye up close and personal?

Drench hoses that have two heads and a fixed wall or bench mount do qualify as eye washes.  These have a locking clip so the stream stays open once activated, and they can be removed from the mount to do their drench hose duty.

See, for example (on my company’s web site): https://www.safetyemporium.com/g5026 or https://www.safetyemporium.com/g5046

Single head drench hoses, while they have a locking clip and can be similarly mounted if desired, would not qualify as eye washes because they do not project a stream at both eyes. See, for example, in yet another mounting style: https://www.safetyemporium.com/g5300

A clear case of two heads are better than one.

A hand drench unit which also functions as an eyewash . . .”

It seems to me that a hand drench unit cannot function as an eyewash because an eyewash must be able to be used without either hand to keep it going or to keep it aimed correctly.  Someone using an eyewash needs to be able to use both hands to hold the eyelids open against strong reflex.
