Barely four days after an explosion rocked chemical line of Onitsha drug market which claimed at least three lives and injured seven others, Anambra state government has sent two bulldozers and heavy duty trucks to evacuate the debris at the scene of the incident.
As a result, the entire drug market popularly known as Ogbogwu and some parts of Tools and Allied section of the Bridgehead market affected by the explosion were closed for business.
Chairman of the drug market, Hon. Ndubuisi Chukwuleta who disclosed this yesterday at the evacuation site, said contrary to previous reports that four lives were lost to the incident, only three were confirmed dead, while seven sustained various degrees of injuries at the last count so far.

LA PORTE, Texas — Officials have given an all clear for La Porte after a warehouse fire burned for several hours overnight.
The fire started around 10 p.m. Saturday at a warehouse along South 5th Street near State Highway 146.
The La Porte Fire Department was concerned chemicals were involved in the fire and asked residents to shelter-in-place. The order was lifted approximately two hours later after officials with Harris County Pollution Control tested water and air from the site.

THE HEALTH RISKS OF WILDFIRE SMOKE

State public health officials and experts are increasingly concerned about residents’ chronic exposure to toxin-filled smoke.
This year has seen the most wildfires of the past decade, with more than 59,000 fires burning nearly 7 million acres nationwide, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Although the total area burned is less than in some recent years, heavy smoke has still blanketed communities throughout the country.
Climate change is causing more frequent and severe wildfires, harming Americans’ health, said Lisa Patel, deputy executive director of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, which raises awareness about the health effects of climate change.
“The data we have is very scary,” she said. “We are living through a natural experiment right now — we’ve never had fires this frequently.”

EXPERIMENTAL VERSUS PREDICTED HEATS OF REACTION FOR SOME COMMON REACTION TYPES IN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

Common pharmaceutical reactions were modeled using the commercially available CHETAH program and the novel TCIT program to obtain heats of reaction values. The programs were used to predict thermochemical data for isolated molecules based on their functional groups. Both programs use group theory, CHETAH, commercially available through ASTM and TCIT using a more modern approach and under development at Purdue. Reactions such as amide coupling (via both uronium reagent and T3P), debenzylation, bromination, tert-butyloxycarbonyl deprotection, Suzuki couplings, and halogenation were analyzed. These values were then compared to experimental values to assess the accuracy of each program’s predictions. Experimental values were provided by several pharmaceutical companies, who participated and advised in this endeavor, as listed in Acknowledgements. Deviations were on average within ±20% of experimental values for both programs, but outlier behavior with respect to certain funct!
ional groups was distinct. CHETAH calculations were at times hampered by missing groups, which was not the case for TCIT, which is designed to be arbitrarily extensible. This project resulted in a broader molecular library for TCIT, exposure of shortcomings in CHETAH, and strategies to improve accuracy moving forward.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, fire crews are still battling an early morning hazmat fire at a paving company.

Firefighters were called to 5201 Brighton Avenue just after 3 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a petroleum-based tank on fire. After ensuring the area was safe, crews called in hazmat units to help attack the fire and surrounding tanks.

Fire officials say power to the tank was quickly turned off to help minimize the threat.

No official word on how much petroleum-based chemical is in the tank.

Firefighters expect to be on the scene for quite some time.

WO members of staff at Appleton School were treated by paramedics earlier today following a “chemical spill”.

Essex Fire, police and ambulance crews were rushed to the South Benfleet school this afternoon.

Emergency services were responding to reports of a “chemical spill” caused by the mixture of two swimming pool chemicals – one understood by the Echo to be chlorine.

One has been taken to Southend hospital.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.56pm to a chemical incident in Appleton School on Croft Road in South Benfleet.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Thursday filed a lawsuit against 3M, DuPont and 16 other chemical companies, saying a class of substances they have made for decades known as “forever chemicals” are responsible for widespread pollution and public health risk.

Bonta, who filed the lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court, said the companies are liable for “hundreds of millions of dollars” in penalties and cleanup costs across California for continuing to make the chemicals while knowing of their danger yet concealing it. California joins a number of states in taking action against the chemicals, which are not currently regulated by the federal government.

“For decades manufacturers were aware of the toxicity of these chemicals, persistence and prevalence in humans,” Bonta said at a news conference on the San Francisco waterfront. “But they chose to deliberately mislead the government and the public.”

The synthetic chemicals — known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS — are used in thousands of products.

In some studies, they have been linked to increased risk of high blood pressure in pregnant women, developmental delays in children, including low birth weight, and the increased risk of some cancers, including prostate, breast, kidney and testicular cancers. They also have been shown to reduce the immune system’s ability to fight off infections.

ROE HIGHWAY: MOTORISTS URGED TO WASH CARS AFTER FORRESTFIELD CHEMICAL SPILL

Motorists who drove on Roe Highway in Forrestfield on Thursday morning are being urged to wash their cars immediately after a truck rolled and caused a chemical spill.

The truck flipped on Roe Highway between Tonkin Highway and Orrong Road/Welshpool Road East resulting in a chemical spill about 10.40am.

People who drove south-bound on the highway between 10.40am and 11am are now being urged by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to wash their cars with water as soon as possible.

The truck was carrying drums filled with sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid.

“Crews have neutralised the spilled product. Any remaining product will be diluted with water which will be retained and removed from the area,” DFES said.

“There will only be small amounts on your vehicle and the advice is to wash your car with water.
