Hi,

We use the “Dynalon™ Non-Hazardous-Waste Lab Disposal Box” (Fisher Scientific #14-174-20) for disposal of any non-hazardous (chemical or biological) lab waste: including PPE (gloves, etc.), tubes (glass and plastic), pipettes (glass and plastic), broken glass, etc. We chose this type of collection method to prevent janitorial staff from handling lab waste that may be “RCRA clean”, but still be contaminated with chemicals, and to prevent “suspicious looking” waste from spilling out into a dumpster, or surrounding area, from a garbage bag ripping open.  We have been using these boxes for about five years and have not had a single puncture through the plastic bag liner/ box from pipettes or broken glass.  Given that the contained lab waste is “RCRA clean”, the waste can be disposed of through municipal waste collection, however, we choose to have our hazardous waste broker dispose of the full boxes as non-hazardous waste.  For non-biohazard metal (or other rigid small gauge material) sharps, we use non-biohazard sharps containers (Covidien EnviroStar™ Noninfectious Waste Sharps Disposal Containers 2 gallon, green, Fisher Scientific # 14-830-107)—we also have our hazardous waste broker dispose of as non-hazardous waste.

Hi Hugo,

We got a 5 gallon bucket with a screw on lid. We drilled a hole in the lid for them to drop the pipette tip in.
Since ours are used with human/ animal cells, the buckets get dumped directly into a hard sided biohazard bin.

If you're not worried about biohazard contamination, you could use a broken glass box instead of a bucket (or any cardboard box that's big enough)

Hi,

We are having a problem with serological pipettes sticking through waste bags.  Has anyone had a good solution how to dispose of these?

Many thanks!

Hugo
