Demystify:
How is the LSTs funding managed? As in who does the purchasing within the LST or what type of account is used?
An LST would greatly benefit by having their funding located in a private non-profit account instead of having to manage the bureaucratic hurdles faced when accessing funds within a university account. In some cases when the money is in a university account the LST members may entirely rely on their faculty advisor or champion for each of their purchases.

I look forward to hearing these questions be addressed!

Best,
Caroline

TL;DR What questions do you have about academic, student-led lab safety teams (LSTs)? Please send by EOB Thursday, October 5.

In a discussion with Mary Beth Mulcahy about how LSTs could share their stories, structures, initiatives, and perspectives, we thought that the LSTs should also address some of the lingering questions around LSTs. Hence, I am reaching out to this group for your questions or confusions around these student/researcher-led safety teams. Below are some of the initial questions that came up in our discussion to help inspire you all. If you also have these questions please repeat them in your response and send your questions to me by EOB Thursday, October 5.
  • What is the role of an LST champion? What is unique about an administrator, faculty, or EHS professional serving as a champion?
  • What does LST funding look like? How are funds used? What would an LST do with nothing, $500, $1000, $10000?
  • How does an LST develop from nothing to something impactful?
  • What impact do LSTs actually have? Anonymous examples of compliance issues LSTs identified and helped fix.
Thank you for your questions!

Best,
Brady
