Hi Todd,

After the HVAC system work is complete and everyone walks away, then it’s time to get those fume hoods recertified.  Bring in TSS https://techsafety.com/ or some other specialist and get those certification stickers on the fume hoods.  This is non-negotiable https://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/5154_1.html in California, and I’m pretty sure Oregon has similar mandates.  Ask the Oregon TSS sales rep for the correct verbiage to include in your CYA email.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Fume hood Certification

Hi All-

Based on my experience and education in EH&S, I believe the best practice is always to recertify fume hoods if any major work is done to a fume hood HVAC system. We recently had the old venturi pneumatic valves, digital flow controls and sensors replaced and upgraded as well as some other maintenance (i.e cleaning out heating coils in the ducts) this past year. I requested the fume hoods to be recertified after the project is complete, but I am getting some push back and I am being told that they will only be rebalancing the HVAC system. Can anyone shed some light on this and if there are any OSHA or ANZI regulations that would help support my request.

I respectfully acknowledge that Willamette University was built on the land of the Kalapuya, who today are represented by the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians, whose relationship with this land continues to this day. I am grateful to the land itself, to those who have stewarded it for generations, and for the opportunity to study, learn, work, and be in community on this land. I acknowledge that the University’s history, like many others, is fundamentally tied to the first colonial developments in the Willamette Valley. I respectfully acknowledge and honor past, present, and future Indigenous students of Willamette.
